It's like project city over at my house lately. We're still chipping away at the finishing touches in our basement. I never dreamed putting things away and getting organized would take this long, but I'm thankful for the progress being made.

Even our bedroom is undergoing a few changes. A couple weeks ago we hosted a garage sale at my house and my grandma contributed a couple mystery boxes that I was unaware of until the garage sale was actually going on! It was a super close call, because my most treasured set of items of hers were in one of the boxes!! A Four Seasons wall hanging set from Coppercraft Guild. I know it seems pretty silly that they would be so important and memorable to me, but I always remember wanting them from a very, very young age. Needless to say they are now mine and awaiting their turn to be hung up in our bedroom like they were in hers all those years.

Today I received a FREE extra long 60s Walnut dresser with a mirror for our bedroom. My dad originally bought a full set for his cabin, but couldn't fit this particular one in any of the rooms. So I guess I lucked out! This thing is the absolute coolest and I'm glad because I agreed to take it based only on knowing the wood type and seeing the headboard from the set. I was pretty confident I knew what the shape would be and I was spot on. She needs a light scrub and some oil to restore the shiny finish in places, so onto the list that goes. Pictures to come obviously!

Because I've been so focussed on home things and haven't posted anything new lately (in the shop and on the blog) I decided to have some simultaneous sales going on in both shops. Maybe you've seen them already, but if you haven't...

Art Talk - My Relationship with my Work

Before anything else, I would classify myself as a pattern artist. Don't get me wrong, I can do a lot of other styles with a variety of different media. A common misconception from someone standing on the sidelines of the art world is that an artist can do only one thing. We have talent for one look only and in all others, we fall short. This is not always true. We choose.

I feel like I didn't choose or create my style like others maybe do. But I did decide I liked where I was going. Years ago I made this amazing vintage wallpaper piece that truly inspired me as I went. After that, I couldn't quite figure out how to move on from there. In my mind everything was falling short. I thought my wallpaper piece would be a one time thing. But in the end it was a jumping off point from which my best creations have been born.

I am inspired by a lot of things and I take a lot of influence from feelings, possessions, history and knowledge. Being self taught, I have always felt this kept my work and it's emotion at its rawest and purest form. My aim is always to create texture and detail wherever I might go on paper.

Right now my heart is really open to 60s and 70s retro patterns. I think if I really analyzed that it would be in part due to my underlying love for vintage repeating patterns, the growing retro-loving and collecting community, the popularity of vintage in entertainment as of late, i.e. Mad Men, and  of course my interest in modernizing for the masses.

As someone who grew up getting weird looks because I preferred everything I owned to be old and antique, I always had this task ahead of me to take what I loved and make people get it. In their own minds, I wanted them to feel how I felt about vintage and about their historical and sentimental relevance. I realized through my art that mixed media pieces would get me to that place a lot faster than anything else could.

My art is not about a subject. You usually never see real, tangible things in them. It's more about feelings or moods that will bring you to where I'm hoping to take you. Through the use of mixed media I can open myself up to surrealist views and truly create whatever I envision. Even things that don't quite make sense or have a true explanation. For me, it's not just about the pattern anymore. It's about the whole story I can create by first developing a pattern and branching off of it.

For example, sometimes I plug into a pattern I love, and then I will imagine it in the past. On someone's wall, perhaps - the background of someone's actual life. Who is this person? What do they do for a living? How do they dress? It's not always about a person, place or thing. Other times I already know where I need to go with something, and I let the colours and shapes lead the way. All these imaginary answers are crucial for me to develop and piece together my artworks. It seems so weird I know, but I feel it's incredible that technically, as an adult, I still get to play.

I know art talk can be so abstract, serious and formal. I think maybe in part because the artist feels so deeply about it. I know that's my thing. Let's face it, if I didn't feel deeply about my work, I probably wouldn't be making it. It's my self expression and a way to pour out all of my thoughts. I love it wholly and I let it envelope my life.

It's always so different looking at a piece of art in person and then talking to or reading about an artist in their life. I think that's why I am so interested in keeping that dialogue free and transparent. You can come to your own conclusion and also see my point of view, if you're interested.

These photos you've been seeing here are a few of the newer things I've been working on lately. You'll notice none of them are ever quite the same as the other, but I treasure them equally, and attempt to tell their stories all in a similar, cohesive way. I hope you enjoy them!

 This summer you're going to see a lot of new pieces finally entering my Etsy shop. I've been saying that for quite a long time now, but I finally have the energy to get them out there. I have planned out a very extensive overhaul of the look of CharmingShop. I really hope I can create a better world for my art. It's so hard to have an online template and have your views and abilities translate through that. I haven't figured out how to make that work quite yet, but it's getting there.

Out with the Old, In with the New: A New Look for CharmingShop

Wow, it's actually been a whole year since I opened my first Etsy shop, CharmingShop.

If you haven't been there in a while, or you haven't been there ever, I thought it might be time again to say hello from the metaphorical shop counter and tell you a little bit about my shop right now, and what I have in store for it in the coming months.

If you've been with me from the beginning, I had originally began with jewellery and started to slowly add in my artwork after I saw the potential of the two blending in nicely together. My overall theme and wish for CharmingShop was over-the-top cuteness and vintage tie-ins all around!

I like sweet things and romantic florals, repetitions and patterns and most of all, colour. Okay Okay, I have a lot of faves and interests. And to say the least, I imagined I could combine all these elements into one pretty adorable and cohesive online shop.

These days I've decided less is more. 2014 will be the year of a more minimal and streamlined approach. So if you've stopped by recently, you may have noticed a new shop look. My banner has changed. My jewellery listings dwindling and slowly exiting the shop. In fact, now they're completely absent. As much as I love seeing my vintage-inspired necklaces, bracelets and earrings among my artwork in the shop, I know that I have a greater focus to get a handle on now. I'm strictly focusing on art and paper goods.

The reason?

Well my original love is with my art. Exploring that world is so important to me. So from now on I will have more time to create and continue to develop my skill. I love making jewellery, but it's more of a hobby to me. Time is so precious and there's not enough of it. Am I right? Now I'm going through my life and picking out what is essential for me and what's not. I feel like only working on art will add new strength to my shop. Unifying it with one look. I'm excited for the future of my work. Thinking about the art I will create is making me so antsy to start new projects! In fact I already have quite a few lined up to be added any day now!

New Artwork Coming Soon

Mixed Media Pattern Collage, Entitled "His Favourite" (Unfinished, work in progress.)

I haven't blogged in a little while, and that's because I've been exclusively working on a new set of art pieces to add into the shop. As I said before, I've marked down ALL of my jewellery to make room for new artwork (and possibly new confetti come springtime!) I already have three pieces in the works at this moment.

Lately I've been trying to get our art room organized. When you have two artists living under the same roof and sharing a tiny space, things get out of control fast. There are pencils and paints and brushes in every box and area possible. I couldn't tell you where anything is exactly. So this January my goal was to get this area cleaned up. Regrettably, that stopped fast when I found my old portfolio and found some new inspiration in it. 

I only really held my unfinished pieces in there. The ones I was stuck on and couldn't bring myself to finish. In fact a lot of them are from high school. It's always weird to look back on your old work, don't you think? I feel like I know my artistic path now and back then it was more like trial and error. I didn't have a real system for creating art. I felt like now I could be able to breathe new life into them, when I couldn't before. So now my thought was to take all the unfinished pieces I still loved, and transform them them with my current style. It almost feels like collaborating with my 18 year old self.

This piece in particular is from 2008. I was nearing the end of high school. I was at a very cool place in my life artistically. All I thought about was creating, and I really did spend all my time doing just that. This piece was a result of my constant work, but I never finished it. I always loved it's peachy tones and collaged circle of children sitting quietly in the bottom corner. Adding what I know now, I think, has made it even better than I could've made it five/six years ago. 

As you probably guessed, all my pieces will feature multi-layers of retro-inspired designs and patterns. There will be lots of collaging, lots of colour and lots of movement. I'm really proud of starting all these old pieces up again. It feels like such a sad waste to let them stay half-done. If I still feel something for them, why wouldn't I keep elaborating on them? 

Anyway I only wanted to share this unfinished piece with some of its new additions, so you can see what's kept me away from here for a while. I promise I've got so many pieces to wrap up and start photographing and/or scanning to list in the shop. I want to take CharmingShop in a new direction for 2014. This time with my art more in focus.

CharmingShop at the Farmers Market

It's no secret my little business, CharmingShop, made it's public debut this summer at the Red River Farmers Market here in Winnipeg. I took tonnes of set-up photos, because one of my very favourite things to do is create themed parties, unique decorations and set-ups for absolutely anything. I'm pretty big on presentation, and getting it just right was so important to me. All five weeks I changed the table look a bit, but I think it was consistently "CharmingShop". In case you didn't get to stop by, here is a little look into my Summer months at the market. Just in time, before Fall starts getting a bit too serious!

I apologize for the crazy combination of all the days together. It's just one of those days where my computer is acting up I guess. I just want you to get the general idea of how my booth was set up each day. 

I took all of my work to the market, including just about everything that's on my Etsy site. I also had some exclusive market pieces such as some one of a kind charm keychains and handmade confetti. (Well the confetti is in the shop now, but it wasn't at the time!) I was so happy to see lovely customers in person! Sometimes it's nice to get that personal view on your work. The internet doesn't always provide that closeness you need to hear upfront feedback. I also believe in giving the best possible customer service too, so being able to give you all 100% of my time and giving you a face to place with the shop was my pleasure! I'm definitely human, not just my internet/Etsy/blog work. Sometimes it's hard to recognize internet artists and sellers are in fact real people with real lives, so if you came out to see me in person, I'm so glad! I live for that connection.

Just as I posted the other day and also touched on in this post, my confetti is now up in the shop. So brides, decorators, party-goers, go to my Etsy shop right now to collect some seriously adorable confetti! It's 100% created by me and I enjoy making it. All my listings are for one individually. But believe me, I can make you however many you need! 

As much as I'd like to keep posting some awesome new CharmingShop goodies for you on Etsy, I have to take a little break from creating right now. CharmingShopVintage is calling! The next few weeks will be vintage-crazy and retro-filled. I have been hunting down the best of the best and I can't wait to get the new shop opened for you guys. I'll keep you posted of course.

Happy Tuesday and Welcome back to the CharmingShop Blog

Hello ladies and gentlemen! How are you on this fine day? I haven't been on here in a few weeks. Mostly because I wanted my blog to have time to breathe, so the very top post would still be about my CharmingShop Contest. If you're new here, welcome! Just scroll down a bit to the post below. There you will find all the details of my contest, which is still going on by the way! It ends August 31st and that day is really creeping up on us now. Gosh, I can not believe summer is almost over already. What happened there?!

I have so much to tell you about, but I really want to let you in on the details! So no quickly mushed together post about a million topics. I'm going to spread it out and tell you over the next few days. Sounds like a plan? Okay! As I have touched on before, I've been at the Red River Farmers Market here in Winnipeg, selling my art prints, fashion jewellery and hand-punched confetti sachets! I've also been scouring the city with my volunteer vintage hunting buddy (my mom!) to get started on my new Etsy shop, CharmingShopVintage! It's just bare bones at the moment, but when I get some items listed, you lovely people will be the first to know. It will be postponed a bit, because I'm helping the comic artist boyfriend of mine meet his artistic deadlines. And on the 4th, I head out on an end of summer road trip to Wisconsin! Hooray! (Expect some travel posts! Did I really even have to warn you?)

CharmingShop is becoming more than just a dream for me. Every day I get closer to my goals and the expectations I set for myself. That's more than I could ever ask for. And you know what? You are the reason that's happening. You, sitting there reading this. You're contributing to the movement propelling me forward and pushing me to invent new ways of expressing my art form. So thank you, dear readers!

I'll keep developing CharmingShop, and giving you sweet atomic era eye candy.

Speaking of Atomic Era eye candy, I have a little interview on the Winnipeg Etsy Street Team Blog today! It's Who's New Tuesday. I joined my local Etsy Team a couple months back. And although I'm naturally shy and enjoy working alone, I'm really blessed and happy that I joined WEST. Just knowing that I have a group of people to potentially reach out to if I need help is really relieving. Sometimes you just don't know all the answers. A new pair of eyes on your work gives a fresh perspective you might not have gotten otherwise. Not to mention some emotional support from people who know exactly how tough it is to create your own small business and stay positive, so you can keep going and not give up. Never give up. If you're on Etsy and you don't have a team, I recommend finding one for yourself. Stop by the WEST blog and take a look at my little interview. Winnipeg Red Diver Farmers Market - Dates for CharmingShop

Happy long weekend, lovelies! As I told you last weekend was my very first Farmers Market day. It was busy and I got a fantastic response to my table, which was truly inspirational for me. I snapped a few shots. I apologize in advance for the blurriness and in all, very bad photos. My table was in front of the window, which was great for me, because it helped me stay warm all day, but it didn't make for the best photos. I took these just before packing up for the day. People came earlier than I expected, so my initial photo shoot time was put on hold. Check 'em out!

 

I was right beside the Tupperware table! It was so hard not to peek over and look at all the neat things!

P.S. Did you know they make replacement lids for vintage Tupperware?! That is so awesome!

It was wonderful to be able to chat with some great people. Just having nice conversations with customers about retro items they own or have owned was so fun. I talked with an older lady about her fabulous collection of 1900s to 1920s jewellery. I got vintage and jewellery lovers of all types. I really enjoy finding out how other people celebrate history and embrace the heirlooms life passes to us, whether we seek it out or it's given to us from family. We are so lucky to be able to collect old treasures. And because my whole shop focusses on the past, I'm so thankful to be reminded of my passion day in and day out. If you've got a treasure, I want to know about it!

Thanks for being so patient with me these past few months. It's been a rough road, but receiving sweet comments about how adorable the prints are really pushed me along! So thank you to everyone who left me little notes of love. And even if you didn't and you secretly loved them, thanks to you too! No need to wait for one more second though. They're finally here! A Quick Shop Update

Hello everyone, just checking in on this regular ol' Monday. I've been busy working online today, doing some tidying up around CharmingShop. I thought I'd let you know what's going on around the shop, before I get back to my market plans. (Have you seen my recent Instagram posts on the prints that will soon be available? If not, head on over there!) I just went through my shipping prices and did some well overdue price-chopping for your benefit. I want you guys to enjoy my work and if I can lower my prices just a tad, I will. Plus all my CharmingShop stock will be coming with me to my upcoming markets, so if there's something you've been eyeing, buy it now while you still can! Atomic Era Figurals - New Artwork for Collectors of Mid Century Cuteness

What have I been up to lately? Oh, just starting a brand new art collection. I mentioned it the other day, but I couldn't post any pictures, because I was having technical problems. Well I'm back up and running now, so I have a few little goodies for you all!

 I'm crazy about giving cute little faces to random objects, as you could probably tell by my Balloon Girls. It was an easy choice in animating my favourite retro items! It's a six piece collection that I will make available through prints. These are just the skeletons and outlines of each one so far. I'm just giving you the beginning stages, so the end result will be a big surprise. Expect lots of atomic era details and amazing retro brights. This is the most delightful little collection, and I'm so happy to be working on each little character. They look so pleasant, don't they? Got any questions, or want to make sure you get your hands on one? Let me know! I'll make prints according to demand, so if you're interested in one let me know! They will be available through my Etsy shop when they're ready. I'll let you fantastic people know when they're done and ready for the shop. Until then, I've got to get to work on the last two sketches and start fleshing out each piece. I'm pretty taken with the lamps, but in all honesty I kind of want to keep a print of each one. I feel like I have to name each little guy from each piece...Yeah, I'm already obsessed.

New Atomic Era Collection

Hello everyone! I'm working on a brand new art collection! I'm taking my inspiration straight from atomic era home decor pieces that I love. Of course, adding a little twist by giving them sweet little faces! I've just been posting updates through Instagram, so if you want to see, click on my Instagram link on the right side of my blog. I'm having some trouble loading pictures from my phone onto my computer today for some reason. I just wanted to let you know I'm trying to keep you updated, but things just aren't working today! Shop Update

Hello there!

If you haven't heard already, I am finished my spring/summer vintage fashion collection! It took a while, but it was worth it. Take a look for yourself!

These first two pictures are Instagram photos of my very last piece I did - a retro bathing suit piece. I think it was the perfect addition to the shift dresses and lovely glasses. Did I represent all your favourite styles??

These are my favourite photos of the grouping. (Excuse my toe in first one. It kind of gives you an idea of the size of the works I guess.) Which one is your favourite?

I'm going to try to have these up in the shop soon, but I will keep you posted of course. I know it's been a long wait, but you'll have to hang in there just a little longer my dears! I just want to get you great quality prints for the best possible price. As I said before, these pieces will be available as prints. In't that awesome?! Yes! I really can't wait to start scanning these and taking photos, because the detail in each item on the page is very exciting. I'm all about the details, you know.

What's next? Well I have a few things up my sleeve. We're still trying to get organized for our garage sale/CharmingShop table, and I'll slowly be working on changing up this blog to make it more functional too. Between that I will be working on some really adorable new print collections and adding some new Balloon Girls into the mix.

Hello my lovely readers!
Today I'm here to tell you CharmingShop has officially joined Pinterest. I created an account months ago, but never pinned anything, because I had too much on my plate, what with the opening of CharmingShop and all the creating and business work. But now, I thought getting my Pinterest account up and running would be a good thing to do. So I've been pinning my own items up all morning. I plan on using Pinterest a lot. Just like Instagram. I'm a photo addict. I wanted to get all my work up for you to look at on a couple boards, and then I'll start pinning other things that I enjoy. I am actually excited to start pinning. I think I will be obsessed with it. I'm not sure if that worries me or if I'm just so overjoyed by the thought of grouping cool photos together. Oh boy. This should be good...

Crazy for Shift Dresses!

What I had originally wanted to do today was an Outfit post. I know you guys barely ever get to see me, and what I look like. (Sorry I'm shy!) I'm trying to be more present in pictures in my blog and I thought starting this lovely Wednesday off with a fashion blog post would be nice. But...I have a coldsore. The first one I have ever had in my entire life. Thanks. And paint stuck in my hair and on my hands. Not a pretty sight right now. Sorry guys. That outfit post will have to wait a bit.

Instead I thought I would treat you with a fabulous finished product.

This piece took me two days to finish. I powered through it as fast as I could, while trying to make it as awesome as it could possibly be. You know how I love a good vintage find. Well I just thought really hard about what I like a good vintage shift dress to look like. If I was in a thrift store, what kinds of dresses would I want to find there? Well here they are.

This piece will not be released yet. It's in the same series as the Retro Glasses pieces. All of these cool pieces will be released as open edition prints once I finish a couple more. There will be five or six in the  group. Too many to choose from, right?! So far I want a print of each of them! What's a girl to do??
