It's like project city over at my house lately. We're still chipping away at the finishing touches in our basement. I never dreamed putting things away and getting organized would take this long, but I'm thankful for the progress being made.

Even our bedroom is undergoing a few changes. A couple weeks ago we hosted a garage sale at my house and my grandma contributed a couple mystery boxes that I was unaware of until the garage sale was actually going on! It was a super close call, because my most treasured set of items of hers were in one of the boxes!! A Four Seasons wall hanging set from Coppercraft Guild. I know it seems pretty silly that they would be so important and memorable to me, but I always remember wanting them from a very, very young age. Needless to say they are now mine and awaiting their turn to be hung up in our bedroom like they were in hers all those years.

Today I received a FREE extra long 60s Walnut dresser with a mirror for our bedroom. My dad originally bought a full set for his cabin, but couldn't fit this particular one in any of the rooms. So I guess I lucked out! This thing is the absolute coolest and I'm glad because I agreed to take it based only on knowing the wood type and seeing the headboard from the set. I was pretty confident I knew what the shape would be and I was spot on. She needs a light scrub and some oil to restore the shiny finish in places, so onto the list that goes. Pictures to come obviously!

Because I've been so focussed on home things and haven't posted anything new lately (in the shop and on the blog) I decided to have some simultaneous sales going on in both shops. Maybe you've seen them already, but if you haven't...

Personal and Shop Finds for August

I can't believe we're more than halfway through August already. When did that even happen?! To break the blues of summer ending faster than we all want, I thought I would recap my top discoveries for this month. so let's do two of mine, and two for the shop!

I came upon this lovely small set of dishes at Value Village a week ago and I'm thrilled about it. I don't really stick to a type or maker when it comes to kitchen items. The only rule is it needs to be turquoise. I'm always on the hunt, but I know everyone else is too. Turquoise has become a very popular colour and tracking it down has become a matter of luck. I'm still in complete shock that this pattern belongs to me!

This letter organizer was a very sweet find at an Estate sale this Saturday. It was the very first thing I spotted and I nabbed it right away. It had a large sticker overtop of the entire "memos"section and a modern pencil holder stuck to the side with adhesive. I got both things off without any trouble. There is some light damage, and obviously needs a good scrub, (I only hung it up for this photo.) but this is exactly the thing we need to get organized and it's aqua! I have always wanted one of these, and had previously considered buying one off Etsy. Now I've got one and the temptation is gone. I can only imagine what they had sold the day before on Friday, because I sure felt like I had taken all the best things, or I should say what I thought were the best. What treasures did I miss? 

This cat salt and pepper shaker is creepy and cute all at once. Found at another Estate Sale, it was part of a shaker collection of the woman's mother that was high in the hundreds. I always love dipping into old salt and pepper shaker collections. You can always tell a lot about the person depending on how crazy their collection is. This one was wonderfully kitschy, and I walked away with three separate pairs for the shop. You'll see the other two sweeties very soon! All three need a good cleaning to be rid of their dust before they're ready for listing. 

Whether we like it or not, Christmas is approaching. For businesses big and small it's always important to get a leg up and be prepared for early holiday shoppers. Whether it be decorations or gifts. I'm pretty bad at getting my gifts organized early, but my decoration planning and buying happens at the first sign of Fall. I get way too excited to put out my family's things now that they've been passed down to me. I suppose it's a childhood nostalgia thing for me. Anyway, the point of this is that I discovered a giant box retro candles that will surely get us all in the mood for winter festivities. I've already glanced through them all to give them a once-over, but I'm pretty excited to take them all out to see what I've got! There a few newer ones at the top, but underneath them are the really cool guys. I know I saw a pretty adorable deer and a perfectly chubby snowman! Around Christmas I also like throwing a cute vintage ornament into my packaged orders for my customers. Maybe this year I'll have a few spare candles! We'll see!

Obviously there's still a little time left for summer garage sales and back-to-school thrifting. Can I find anything cool in the last 14 days of August? I hope so!

What's Old is New

I have recently noticed vintage has taken up a lot of my life, I think mainly because when we started redoing our basement, I had to bring up all my collections and shop items into the living room. Its kind of terrifying to see it all in one place. Yikes. 

So while I've been sitting here, working on stuff amongst the towers of boxes and loose items, (Yes, the living room is currently the only place I can work as well...) I have found myself getting more flexible in what I want to put into the shop. Here are some favourites that went up this week. I have no doubts about finding any of these things new homes, because if I could, I would keep 'em in a heartbeat!  

 These two kitties are cuter than cute! I found them completely speckled black with caked on dirt. They've endured a couple of washes and are now scouting for a new place to live. Every time I look at them I have second thoughts. Should I keep them?

NO.

 This was one of my more exciting finds this year. Mainly because suitcases such as these ones are part of my most treasured childhood memories. We used to have a bunch with paisley prints to hold our toys. They carried our vintage Barbie clothes. The ones my grandmas had made for my Mom and Aunt when they were young from the most retro prints you could ever see, and the ones that came along with those vintage Barbies kept in a separate case. All my Barbies ever wore was vintage. Even at that age I was entranced in another time.

The reason why I love these suitcases specifically is that they're pretty plain. I'm sure that sounds weird, but because of they're simple colour palette, they can easily be unisex for little girls or boys! Or if you're just in need of a cute little set for light travelling, like camping, you might consider this set for yourself. That was my initial thought upon finding them.

 This was a difficult decision, but I don't feel too much attachment to them. Please, someone buy them before I grow to love them! This set of two light green fibreglass shades is pure magic. I already own two different starburst shaded lamps myself. One table lamp and one floor lamp. Upon discovering these, I had instantly claimed them as mine, but reconsidered quickly. I have too many, so I'm letting some other lamp-lovers out there have a chance to own something cool and unusual. 

I thought these sweet girls would be our bedside table lamps forever, but I have recently replaced them. Making excuses to fit them into other areas of our home is just not working! It is highly unusual to find pink lamps of this age, especially with oval-shaped shades and as a pair. They're in excellent (almost like new) condition, but I think mostly because I purchased them from the original owners. I know someone out there will scoop them up and put them on display proudly in their home, just like I did before a couple turquoise two-tiered lamps stole the show and took their place. 

I'm trying to practice a bit more willpower. I actually have amazing willpower already when it comes to "things" and donating and giving items away. Plus my family hosts at least one garage sale every year! I have grown up with them as a tradition and actually look forward to the "junk" cleanse. In recent months I've been hanging onto way too much though. I've been pretty relaxed about my personal rules, and my Fiancé doesn't help. He's probably a bigger collector of random things than I am! Not specifically vintage, but he has a real appreciation for 50s and 60s styles. Especially fonts and cool era-specific designs. It's easy to ignore if you leave it for storage in the basement you don't use. Now that our basement is almost usable I guess I have to face facts and start purging some things. I think I'm okay with that now.

New.

Okay, so things have been kind of crazy over here lately. It seems like I can never find the right time to update the shop, but in the last few days I have put up a some new things. These ones are my favourite batch yet. I think because they are so, so retro. You just can't go wrong with a good 60s or 70s print. No way. 

So here's some I had a very hard time giving up. (Is it bad to try to keep clothes that are not your size just based on prints? Or kitchen things you know you'll never use and don't even go with your colour schemes? Oh dear...)

These mugs make me the happiest. They're just too pretty. You really can't beat that pattern.

I discovered this apron at an estate sale. Handmade by the original owner! So sweet and simple!

In May, I found two pairs of oversized sunglasses. One for me, one for the shop. The lady who owned them had fabulous taste. These ones are the neatest pale green colour, and the ombre lenses are kind of spectacular.

I can not fully express how hard it was for me to list this one. I've never seen one of these vintage bodysuit tops in real life... and now I have. It was a lovely treasure to have come across.

CharmingShop on Television

Hello ladies and gentlemen, 

I hope Spring is treating you nicely! We got back from our Chicago trip less than a week ago now. We had an incredible amount of fun (and of course I'll blog some pictures and quick stories soon!) Even though there were many points at which I wished we could stay there forever, I missed home. Just like the typical homebody that I am, I missed my little cat and sleeping in my own bed! 24 years old and homesick in one of the most beautiful and inspiring cities.

Another reason I couldn't wait to get back here into the swing of things, is that while I was away, my handmade confetti was featured on Steven and Chris. That's two TV shows in the last couple of months! I was contacted to be a part of a grouping of Canadian Etsy sellers who specialize or cater to handmade-loving brides with party favours, wedding decor, or bridal party gifts. I was so honoured to get any kind of air time for my newly blossoming business. My confetti even being in the same vicinity of other Etsy sellers products I have long admired and hoped to one day make a part of my own special day, was so special.

I was in the States and couldn't access the Canadian network, so the suspense was killing me. Maybe you even caught it before I did! ( We had a little video clip of it sent to us a couple days later.) If you didn't see the segment (or both), I thought I would post the links up here for anyone interested.

I am so proud of everything I've accomplished so far, especially when a lot of times I feel very held down by time constraints. I think maybe everyone feels that way. Being noticed is a scary, but great thing. I am so thankful for these opportunities and I'm ready for new experiences that might come my way next.

April Vintage Shop Update

Hello again!

Today was my 24th birthday, tomorrow we'll be crazy busy getting things packed and in order, and...the next day we leave for Chicago! It feels like I've been planning for this for months, but somehow it arrived a little too fast and I'm running around trying to finish things. Isn't that always the way? Haha. Well anyway, before I left I wanted to make sure I did a little post about some of my newly listed favs in CharmingShopVintage. I hope you think they're as cool as I do!

This poodle is out-of-control wonderful! When I found him I had a sudden moment of disbelief followed by disappointment that I knew I couldn't keep him myself! He has some condition issues, but even with his old-age flaws, he's as perfect as can be.

This little Estate sale find is so gorgeous. I wanted to take breathtaking photos of her for the listing. One reason was to show everyone how truly lovely she is. The other reason is that somehow I have formed some unspoken bond with her over the months she's been in my possession. I wanted to have nice photos to remember her by and possible frame up in my house. Even when she does go to a new home, I can keep a picture of her. Oh, the downsides of selling vintage!

I wish I fit this dress. It's so adorable and it reminds me of the dresses my Grandma used to wear. I always wished I could have had her wardrobe. She had the most amazing collection of striped, polka dotted and pastel dresses. This little number would've fit right in. This dress fits a petite, small to small/medium frame - like me, but I don't have the shoulders to pull this one off. Someone out there will look spectacular in it.

It took a lot of thought, but I decided to sell this Pyrex dish. I got it a few years back when we had our apartment. One of my other Grandma's friends was downsizing their home and gave me two big boxes of old kitchen things. I got a lot of casserole dishes, which were much needed at that point in time. We didn't have a lot of stuff back then. This Pyrex casserole dish was among them. These days I have so many kitchen things, so I decided someone else should get some use out of it.

I have recently listed a few Avon containers collected at a variety of Estate Sales and garage sales. There are even more to come. Some of them are really quite beautiful!

Alright that's all I'll show. I know I promised a bathroom renovation blog post this week, but somehow I ran out of time. That'll be held back until we get home, but no longer! Also in case you're wondering, I'm also leaving my shops active so purchases can go through while I'm away. What's New at the Shop

It's St. Patricks Day and I'm staring out my studio room window right now, thinking about how I need to go shovel from the nice blizzard we got yesterday. Not a nice thing when I'm thinking about Spring so much. I've been spending most of my time browsing the internet for floral dresses and thinking about how our Chicago trip is one month away now. It's so close, I already feel like I'm there. 

For a while I wasn't listing anything new in the shop again. I'm so bad for that sometimes. But getting my shop full is still at the very top of my to do list. Not only because I'm going away soon, but Spring means easier access to vintage-hunting here, so I'm sure I'll need some more room for cute things. On top of that we're redoing our basement this Summer, so thinking about my storage space is very important. Even if I do have just as much stuff from bringing in new treasures when the weather warms up, at least maybe I can find an organized designated area for them. Right now it's mayhem.

Anyway, too much babbling. You want to see the new stuff right? 

Okay, I'll show you a few things!

This plant tray is so beautiful. It's from 1955 and it's seen better days, but I just love everything about it. AND it has a dog on it, come on.

It's taking all my willpower not to hang onto this dress. It's a little costume-y for today, but it fits me like a glove. I've never held something like this in my hands before and I'm not sure I will again. It's just that special.

Keeping with the dog theme, I added another dog planter. This guy was mine, but I have two. It was a tough choice on which one should go, but I've decided to try to find this one a new home.  

This little lady is so beautiful. She came from an estate sale, where a lot of other really amazing items were found. The saddest part however, is that her head had broken off at some point and had been glued back on. She was repaired so well without any signs of chips or glue residue that I first thought it was just her neckline. My goal is to find someone who will love her as is, flaws and all.

Out with the Old, In with the New: A New Look for CharmingShop

Wow, it's actually been a whole year since I opened my first Etsy shop, CharmingShop.

If you haven't been there in a while, or you haven't been there ever, I thought it might be time again to say hello from the metaphorical shop counter and tell you a little bit about my shop right now, and what I have in store for it in the coming months.

If you've been with me from the beginning, I had originally began with jewellery and started to slowly add in my artwork after I saw the potential of the two blending in nicely together. My overall theme and wish for CharmingShop was over-the-top cuteness and vintage tie-ins all around!

I like sweet things and romantic florals, repetitions and patterns and most of all, colour. Okay Okay, I have a lot of faves and interests. And to say the least, I imagined I could combine all these elements into one pretty adorable and cohesive online shop.

These days I've decided less is more. 2014 will be the year of a more minimal and streamlined approach. So if you've stopped by recently, you may have noticed a new shop look. My banner has changed. My jewellery listings dwindling and slowly exiting the shop. In fact, now they're completely absent. As much as I love seeing my vintage-inspired necklaces, bracelets and earrings among my artwork in the shop, I know that I have a greater focus to get a handle on now. I'm strictly focusing on art and paper goods.

The reason?

Well my original love is with my art. Exploring that world is so important to me. So from now on I will have more time to create and continue to develop my skill. I love making jewellery, but it's more of a hobby to me. Time is so precious and there's not enough of it. Am I right? Now I'm going through my life and picking out what is essential for me and what's not. I feel like only working on art will add new strength to my shop. Unifying it with one look. I'm excited for the future of my work. Thinking about the art I will create is making me so antsy to start new projects! In fact I already have quite a few lined up to be added any day now!

New Vintage Items at CharmingShopVintage

If you've been to my vintage shop lately, you've probably noticed I've been adding new things almost daily. I want to get everything I have in the shop before our Spring Chicago trip. I have so many things that I've left aside because I didn't think it was the right time to post. Even things I've wondered if I should keep it or not. I have also been going through a lot of our own things to minimize my personal collections. I certainly don't need everything and I try to keep that in mind.

Putting out as many items as I can right now is the best way to ensure the shop is fully stocked, so I'm not rushing around in the end. (I want to keep the shop open while I'm away, but I'll leave more details before then! It's still months away and not a huge deal right now.)

A big thank you to everyone that's been browsing the shop and purchasing. I've had some really lovely people purchasing lately, and I get so excited to ship all these items to their new homes. I always wonder where they'll be placed or how they'll be used in their new lives.

These are all items I've added to the shop in the last few days. The two purses and ring are actually from my own collection, and I've had them for quite a long time. I hope someone loves them as much as I have! I'm pretty in love with both those mushroom plaques and the cat wall hangings, but I'll pass them onto someone else of course!

New Vintage!

Why hello there fellow bloggers and readers! 

I'm here today to show off some new items over at CharmingShopVintage.

This bun warmer is one of those things that isn't totally relevant today, but is so nostalgic for me. It always brings me back to the fancy dinner parties my Grandparents used to throw when us kids were very young. So if you're planning on hosting a retro party, this is the perfect serving tool for you! And take a look at that retro paisley print too by the way. Just incredible.

Winter is absolutely driving me crazy this year. It's so cold here, that all I want to do is stay inside wrapped in a blanket and eat warm food all day. Am I the only one? This fondue pot seemed like a perfect idea right from the start. Fondue anyone? Chocolate or cheese?

I recently said goodbye to my Midge doll, and the very next day I stumbled upon another! How cool is that?! This pretty lady has a couple condition issues, but she sure is gorgeous!

I got a little (okay, a lot) excited when I came across this find. I already have a large collection of this same English set in my shop, but to find the teapot as well was just perfect! These can be purchased separately or as a set by the way. I'm always open to offers!

I've had this awesome dispenser for two years and had every intention of hanging it in my own kitchen. I've decided to let it go, but only because I found another one. My boyfriend says we need to keep the other one, because "the font is bigger and cooler." His words exactly. I love them both, but what can you do when you have two and have to make tough decisions? I had to choose one. I can't have it all!

New Artwork Coming Soon

Mixed Media Pattern Collage, Entitled "His Favourite" (Unfinished, work in progress.)

I haven't blogged in a little while, and that's because I've been exclusively working on a new set of art pieces to add into the shop. As I said before, I've marked down ALL of my jewellery to make room for new artwork (and possibly new confetti come springtime!) I already have three pieces in the works at this moment.

Lately I've been trying to get our art room organized. When you have two artists living under the same roof and sharing a tiny space, things get out of control fast. There are pencils and paints and brushes in every box and area possible. I couldn't tell you where anything is exactly. So this January my goal was to get this area cleaned up. Regrettably, that stopped fast when I found my old portfolio and found some new inspiration in it. 

I only really held my unfinished pieces in there. The ones I was stuck on and couldn't bring myself to finish. In fact a lot of them are from high school. It's always weird to look back on your old work, don't you think? I feel like I know my artistic path now and back then it was more like trial and error. I didn't have a real system for creating art. I felt like now I could be able to breathe new life into them, when I couldn't before. So now my thought was to take all the unfinished pieces I still loved, and transform them them with my current style. It almost feels like collaborating with my 18 year old self.

This piece in particular is from 2008. I was nearing the end of high school. I was at a very cool place in my life artistically. All I thought about was creating, and I really did spend all my time doing just that. This piece was a result of my constant work, but I never finished it. I always loved it's peachy tones and collaged circle of children sitting quietly in the bottom corner. Adding what I know now, I think, has made it even better than I could've made it five/six years ago. 

As you probably guessed, all my pieces will feature multi-layers of retro-inspired designs and patterns. There will be lots of collaging, lots of colour and lots of movement. I'm really proud of starting all these old pieces up again. It feels like such a sad waste to let them stay half-done. If I still feel something for them, why wouldn't I keep elaborating on them? 

Anyway I only wanted to share this unfinished piece with some of its new additions, so you can see what's kept me away from here for a while. I promise I've got so many pieces to wrap up and start photographing and/or scanning to list in the shop. I want to take CharmingShop in a new direction for 2014. This time with my art more in focus.

Jewellery Clearout at CharmingShop

Alright everyone, for 2014 I've decided to streamline everything and to direct my focus. This is starting with a large sale to clear out my jewellery line from CharmingShop. EVERYTHING is on sale. Well out of my jewellery that is. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces. If you have special requests let me know, because I have so many unlisted pieces as well. You might be wondering why I've decided to clear all my lovely jewels out of the shop. Well, it's just time to narrow down to a few things. I took a hard look at what I am able to create and what I enjoy most. I no longer have the time to make jewellery, photograph it and list it. The good news is, that time can now be spent elsewhere. On some new artwork perhaps. 

Jewellery-making is going to forever be a hobby of mine. I'm sure down the road I'll bring out a new collection. And of course I would never say no to any custom orders! New Vintage Coming Soon

Here are some of the new things that will be hitting the shop just before Christmas. Just a heads up, we will be having a pretty nifty Boxing Day Sale, so I'm getting some new things ready and lowering some prices... You're the first to know!

I'm aiming for 20 new listings. There will be clothing, accessories, kitchen items, wall hangings... you name it. I'm in love with this new vintage-selling gig of mine. I'm so happy that all of you have taken an interest in my collecting and curating. And so thankful to those of you who have purchased from the shop. You've made these first months so incredible! I plan on continuing on for quite some time. 2014 will be packed with more vintage goodness.
