Base Beauty - Forever in Use

I've been absent from blogging for well...almost all summer actually. It sort of got away from me, but I can tell you, this Fall I'll be writing full force again. Get ready for some fancy new posts and some new kind of blog dedication!
I'm back on here today to talk about a very select few of my all time favourite beauty products. I picked only these four products, because they're all skincare or base products, which have lead me to find my most beautiful skin. All of these I have used daily and continuously for over three years, with a little swaying for the trial of new things in between. (Which can't be helped. I'm a Cosmetician! I have to try it all!)

Growing up I had THE WORST skin. So much oil and so much acne. I know everyone says that, but all I ever remember is being made fun of for that reason, so to me, it was kind of a big deal at the time. I honestly never dreamed my skin would be considered clear and I would receive compliments on how smooth my skin was. Little does everyone know... haha!

It didn't get there overnight, and it's still something I work hard at every morning and every night. For someone who is interested in claiming their own brand new skincare routine, my advice is find a good regimen and stick to it. Don't cheap out and get sub-par skincare and please, please do not use makeup to cover up what you don't like on your skin. Skincare CAN help you. Whether it's prestige, (some) mass drugstore or prescribed. Do not give up and do not cut corners! Do your research thoroughly. If you can't get the answers on your own, ask for help. There are professionals out there who know what they're talking about, I promise.

I've tried so many things out there to tackle my skin over the years. Some work, others don't. These things are by no means the be all end all items I would use. I have a few I know I can swap out if I need a change. Trust me, the things that are right for you are out there too.

I've been very lucky to find favourites in almost all areas, but mostly I can credit that to being around a lot of testers all the time. For my skin I always test for texture, colour and coverage. I like what I like.

1 - I'll start with what gets applied first - my moisturizer. I used the Neostrata Smoothing Cream in Level 3. This has been my go-to product for such a long time now. It's is a Glycolic Acid based cream, which is made from sugar cane. What is does is act like a physical exfoliator on the surface of your face, eating up dead skin cells and impurities, leaving your skin untouched and smoothe hence the name "smoothing cream." This product is very gentle, especially compared to other exfoliating products with Vitamin C based ingredients for example. It is always something that is recommended, but it can be quite harsh. There is no control there and they often leave the skin irritated, making way for redness and allergic reactions. This moisturizer is like having a gentle daily mask or microdermabration. With this, I don't have to go out of my way to do special treatments on my skin. It's already built into my simple daily moisturizer. Since using this product, my skin has become clearer, my pores have tightened, the whole appearance is smoother and brighter and best of all my makeup goes on like a dream. For anyone interested in trying this product, they are currently reformulating all their Glycolic creams in Neostrata. I've been told they'll soon be fully available, but right now they only have the lower levels 1 and 2. If you find you are sensitive to AHAs or you've never used a product of this type, it is always recommended to start with the lowest level of Glycolic acid and work your way up to get your skin used to the specialized ingredients. (Level 1 is 4%, level 2 is 6% and level 3 is 8%.) This product lasts me about a year before I have to replace it. How amazing is that?!

2 - Second is Lise Watier Sun Smart. This is by far my favourite thing. I don't know if I could ever stop using it. Sun Smart is a universal UV sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Sunscreen is extremely important to me and even if it wasn't, (Hey, I know a lot of people don't wear it still, but you should!) you're going to use an exfoliating product like Neostrata's Smoothing Creams you MUST wear one to protect your skin. Not wearing one will not only leave your skin unprotected while your skin is extra sensitive from exfoliation, it will also reverse the effects of the cream. Don't waste your money! It also has an incredible silky oil free texture. Now usually I say oil free doesn't matter. Oil free things can still be oily and weird, but this thing can mattify like no other, while keeping your skin baby soft and smooth. Because of it's texture it's perfect for swopping out with your everyday primer. In fact I never even think of it as a sunscreen. I always consider it a primer with added benefits. So there you go; two products in one.  And if you didn't think it could get any better, it has also done away with a lot of my acne and cut down my oil production significantly. A good primer will do that for you! This tube can last me anywhere from 4-6 months usually.

3 - Next is a fabulous Foundation which has really done wonders - the Lise Watier Teint Mousse Matifiant in Porcelaine. This foundation has a very similar texture to the "primer" above and is the perfect match for it. It's smooth, easy to apply, and also helps cut down on common skincare issues like oil and acne. When applied, it's finish is matte and silky with what I would classify as a medium to full coverage. As someone with extra pale skin, I find it impossible to find the right shade of foundation. They just don't make them that light. Sure it's easier in lightweight foundations like BB creams or tinted moisturizers, which can blend out right away, but I prefer to have a fuller coverage. Full coverage foundations are not kind to the lightest of skin and you can tell right away if you have the wrong colour. Ladies and gentlemen, please choose your colour wisely. This is the perfect shade of pale. I always recommend it for fair-haired or red-haired people with the lightest of skin tones and it always pulls it off and steals the show. I can't even tell you how many people I have made happy with this foundation over the years. Including myself! This foundation can last me anywhere from 6-9 months.

4 - For my base products I tend to stay away from mass wall products. They are usually made with lower quality ingredients than prestige or the carefully controlled derm products. and are generally not tested outside of their own companies. I'm not saying all mass is bad to use. It's definitely not. I use a great deal of these products myself, but it's just knowing which ones are better than others. We have been lucky in recent years, because these companies are stepping up their game and recognizing that their clientele are more interested in ingredients and raising the bar on their routines. We're asking for more and they are listening. That's why you're seeing higher prices for what you would've considered cheap brands before.

My fourth product is a mass one, which I can say works better for me than any concealer I have ever tried. Mass or prestige. This is the Loreal True Match Touche Magique Concealer in C-3-4-5. I don't know how I ever lived before this product came out. Certainly my dark circles were always more prominent. This is a lightweight liquid concealer with a brush tip with incredible coverage. Not only is it the prefect amount of colour to hide anything you need to hide, it's also light reflecting. Which means light particles bounce off of it, creating the illusion of lighter brighter skin. It's a miracle worker for dark circles and hides acne and discolouration with ease. I will use this concealer forever, and will always recommend it for anyone who tells me they've given up on concealers. This one can last from 5 to 6 months.

Okay that's all for my lesson today! Haha. I'm going to continue to do these posts, because I know there are tonnes of lost people out there wandering their local beauty departments in confusion.
A few key points to remember are to always apply your product correctly. Blending it wrong or failing to follow the directions can make all the difference between a bad application and a good one, which will ultimately make your opinion on whether or not you would use it again. So always check that you're using it right and if you don't know, ask. Another good tip is that almost everyone uses waaaay too much of their products. If you want to get the most out of your money and products, you should be using much smaller amounts. You only need a little bit for them to be effective. The biggest overuses that happen are with skincare, but this can also happen with cosmetics. Always remember, it's easier to put more on if needed than to take it off. In the end you'll find you'll have everything for longer, making your pricier go-to items all the more worth it in the end.

I hope some of this helped you and if you have any questions about these items or any others, feel free to ask! I'm always more than ready to help out or take on a problem! If you have any products you can't live without, let me know! I love hearing what everyone else is using.

Thanks everyone!
And remember, you'll be finding me on here more often now!

New Collections for Spring/Summer 2014

I don't always discuss my cosmetician roots and current real life job, but I know I should. I have a lot of information to give and knowledge to share. I am so lucky to be able to easily get my hands on the latest beauty products and be well informed. Easy access to tricks, trends and new releases are what keep my in the loop and at the top of my game. I have been fortunate to work along side so many beautiful and talented women in my career, and of course lucky to work with such groundbreaking products. The beauty industry never ceases to amaze me. These brands (well most of them) are working harder than ever to keep up with their customers and give them exactly what they want.

With that being said, I am going to introduce you to some of my favourite new and limited edition products right now. I have no loyalty to one brand or another. I am not promoting these for any other reason than I trust in their claims and believe that they work. But remember, beauty is like anything in life, everyone has their own likes, dislikes and opinions.
ONE - One product I'm super excited about is the Limited Edition Gel Liner from Lise Watier. It's part of the Eden Tropical Collection and will only be available until June or until supplies last!
This liner is in a pot form with a screw off lid and glass jar. The packaging itself is very nice and has some weight to it. The product though, is out of this world. It has a great, creamy consistency. It's glossy, smooth and easy to apply. Once dried it acquires a strong matte finish and is resistant to smudging, rubbing or removal, which is lovely for us gals who like waterproof makeup exclusively. The winged or cat eye effect is the perfect matchup for this new eyeliner.

TWO - Clarins recently launched a beautiful new summer product that I know will become really popular in the coming months leading through summer. It's their new Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster. If you've ever tried any of the Clarins Self Tanners or Sun Care products, you'll know Clarins knows how to make your skin glow with a natural finish, and of course, with the health of your skin in mind. This French skincare uses top of the line, nature based ingredients to help your skin radiate. This product is a concentrate. The way it's used is you put two to three drops into your daily moisturizer or lotion and mix well. Apply to your skin and voila! You'll get a nice enhanced bronze look. Subtle and gentle. No harsh looks here.

THREE -  This is also a Clarins product! It's called Splendours Shimmer Body Oil. Now Clarins tends to have a limited edition shimmering body oil available most years and for good reason. It's very popular. Not only does it give you a very sheer glow, the oil is extremely hydrating on your skin, and it smells amazing too! For what this product is, the bottle is huge. You'll definitely have it for a long time. Whether you apply it all over, or maybe just on your legs, your chest or just on your cheeks, this product is worth every penny. Just to clarify though, this is not a self tanner. It does not make you progressively darker. It's only a shimmer product for a temporary glow.

FOUR - Some people like a bronze shimmer (like above) and some like pearl. Personally, I like pearl! The Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Cool Radiance Highlighter is from the new Summer Escape Collection. Oh man, the first time I tested out this illuminating stick I fell in love. If you like shimmery, dewy looks, this highlighter is going to be your best friend. This is a real departure for Elizabeth Arden. I love that this new collection holds something for everyone. Some daring items for young women and classic key products for more mature women. The direction Elizabeth Arden is going in is fabulous and I can't wait to see what else they can come up with. This stick is also limited edition and if I had to guess, based on past collections, it probably won't be coming back once it's gone. How sad!

FIVE - The Lise Watier Cream Blush (or Blush Creme Satin) in Rose Eden for the Eden Tropical collection is heavenly. It comes in a fabulous pot with a screw off lid, much like the eyeliner, but larger. I have never seen such a smooth and gentle application. This blush leaves your skin looking fresh, clean and naturally delicate. The colour payoff is amazing. You just need the finest amount and because the jar is on the larger size, you'll be using it for a long, long time. Right now she is limited edition (hopefully to come back in the future as regular stock though), so pick it up while you still can!

Well I hope you liked this little wrap-up of beautiful items currently on your drug store/ beauty store shelves.
Have a great day everyone!

Chinese New Year Nail Art Ideas

Did you know tomorrow is Chinese New Year? It's the Year of the Horse! Every year I like to paint my nails red and gold to celebrate. Here are some fun ways you can paint your nails for the New Year too!
Love the use of glitter in this nail art! Found here.
The top two nails with the geometric pattern are decorated just with nail decal stickers! Mix and match your nails for an even more creative look. Found here.
If you can't do all these crazy designs and patterns, don't worry about it! Sometimes simpler versions are just as nice! I decided long ago that crackle nail polishes are best used for Chinese New Year. It never gets old. Source Unknown.
These watercolour fish decals are so beautiful! Found here.
These designs would take a very steady hand, but look at how awesome they turn out in the end!  You could even use false nails and paint them before you put them on, if you had to! No shame in that!
Source Unknown.

I know I got some ideas on how I'll be painting mine this year. I usually just stick to a more plain red and gold, but maybe I'll put more detail into it this time!

Well I'm off to make some yummy soup and banana bread. Today is a cooking day.
See ya later!

Great Summer Sales - Fashion I'm Obsessing Over!

I am so obsessed with summer fashion lately. The prints this year are seriously out of control in a great way! I would love to add each and every one of these pieces to my closet. Oh yes!
Okay I know, I know. I ended on unlucky number 13. Sorry guys. But what if I told you absolutely ALL of these items are on sale right now? And not just a "few dollars off" pitiful sale. They're way cheaper than normal! I thought I'd pass on these great deals, because I love you guys so much.
Which one is your fav? I'm totally drooling over that ModCloth 50s inspired shell crop top. Just incredible!

See, that wasn't unlucky AT ALL. Happy shopping ladies! While you're on the web, check out my Instagram (link button on the side of my blog.) I'm getting prepared to make my 6 Retro Collection art pieces into prints! I'm way too excited to see how they turn out! Are you? Give me a shout and let me know which one is your favourite! I need to know how many to make, and you know... there are some contests in the works!

Nail Growth Tips

Hello ladies and gentlemen, are you having a fabulous weekend? I am. It's been busy, but oh so eventful. Yesterday while trying to find second hand retro knobs for our kitchen cabinets, we stumbled upon a real beauty - a ridiculously good looking 50s couch, with a gorgeous, scrolling wooden frame. Original gold and olive green upholstery. It was a dream. We both saw it at the same time, and fell instantly in love. So after putting it on hold, arranging a truck to get it, and cleaning it like crazy, it's sitting in our living room like it was always part of the family. I am just so crazy about it. We both are. I have a little photo of it on Instagram (@marissahowes) if you want a sneak peek, but if not, I plan to eventually get around to doing room tours on here. You'll see it sooner or later I'm sure!

But that's not really the subject of my post today. It's nails! I looove nail polish. When I wear it, my nails grow pretty long, and I just like the classy shine of well manicured hands. I'm a big advocate for do-it-yourself manis or home manicures, whatever you want to call it. When you do the upkeep yourself, it's so much cheaper, and come on, it makes you feel good when you can do it yourself. With all the different tools and tricks available to buy now you can achieve and look or effect yourself. It's so easy now and most of the time, everything looks like it came from a salon. You can even do gel nails yourself now! That's crazy! You should be excited about all the nail technology these days. I am!

I have done some schooling in the art of nails, so I wanted to share some tips and tricks for maintaining long and strong nails AND keeping that polish on for longer than a day without chipping...

#1 BE HEALTHY - This is probably the most important. You're nails will grow best if you eat healthy, exercise, and maintain a positive attitude. When you have a healthy mindset and you get it into action, your whole body benefits! Vitamins and supplements can help too if you need them.

#2 OIL/LOTION - Massage your nail area with oils and lotions. It softens the skin around your nails and stimulates growth too! You wouldn't believe how much this helps. Vitamin E oil is really great, because it has healing properties to it. Its good for taking care of any rough areas, cuts, or hangnails.

#3 CUTICLES - Soak your fingers in warm water, and gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher. This cleans up your nail for easier nail polish application and also stimulates nail growth. This tip always works to get longer nails. Above all else, I swear by this tip the most.

#4 NAIL POLISH REMOVER - always go over your nails with nail polish remover before you paint them. If you've been soaking them, pushing back the cuticles and applying oils or even just touching your nails too much, there are oils on your nails now that will interfere with your nail polish application. Quickly wipe them to make sure they're completely clean. We want the nail polish to stick, not melt off!

#5 DON'T SHAKE - Don't shake your polish! It can actually create bubbles or turn your polish to a weird unusable consistency. Just roll it in between your two hands gently to warm it up. That's all you need. And don't shake your hands when your nails are drying either! That can create bubbles and your polish can even come right off if you're shaking to hard! It's all about gravity. If you're in a hurry, blow on it, take your hands over to a open window for a bit, or buy quick drying top coats. They're awesome.

#6 DO THE WORK - If you want your nail polish to stay, do a base coat, two coats of colour and then your top coat. It's foolproof. If you leave a step out, your nail polish won't be as strong, and it will probably chip earlier than you want it to.

#7 CAP IT - I cap every coat of polish I do. Even the base and top coat. This means swiping the polish over the very tip of the nail. This tip is a miracle worker. Trust me, sometimes I can get up to 10-12 days without a chip. It's amazing.

#8 LET IT DRY - Take your time and don't rush. Your coats should be completely dry until you move onto the next one.
These are some quick shots of my current nail situation. I'm wearing an Anna Sui red. I've had this one on for a while now without a chip in sight. I have to keep my nails fairly short to do my artwork, jewellery and various craftwork, but I can grow these babies pretty long if I follow my routine.
Follow these tips and you'll be headed for gorgeous, healthy nails! Yay!
Grow those nails!

we love charming make up.

Let's talk cosmetics. I'm a huge fan. I like getting all dolled up in red lipstick and false lashes. It's so fun to put on a little more than you normally would, just for a bit of extra fun. I wanted to share with you our photo shoot makeup choices, to show how we got camera ready! This is how our Charming girls get ready...
For our make up, I was channeling a pinup look. I was really inspired by glamorous Old Hollywood beauties. My jewellery line is for having fun. It's quirky and a little wild, still with elegant touches. I wanted to play up it's softer side, by creating a make up look that was elegant, feminine and super romantic. So I stuck to a flawless, creamy complexion. Skin is everything, so picking a velvet-y foundation paired with a light reflecting concealer, soft dusting of powder, and lots of highlighter, can leave you with the dewiest, dreamiest skin. Yay! Define your brows. Nothing is stronger and sexier on the face than a defined brow that isn't over the top, but holds your look just perfectly still looking natural. The brows are the anchor of the face, you know! The placement of bronzer is also key. It should be slightly under the cheekbone and contour your face perfectly. High impact eyes require lots and lots of big lashes, so finding the prettiest pair of false lashes is lovely. Add some cat eyes by winging out your eyeliner past your eye and up slightly. Did you know that makes your eyes look wider and more awake?! Lastly red lips. Nothing says Old Hollywood more than the perfect shade of red on your pout. So there it is. High (vintage) drama CharmingShop style.
We love our kitschy, crafty style and adding a dramatic make up look, shows our belief that every girl has many sides. Our photo shoot choices definitely sum up how we feel about CharmingShop and the lifestyle surrounding it. We're offbeat and we love it. We just want you to be whoever you are! Strange, unique, funny, pretty - whatever you are, embrace it. There's more than one side to you, and we love that!

Hope you enjoyed a little look at how we operate at our make up table on photo shoot days.
I'm still feeling a little under the weather, but I'm still working on some special art for you all.
Stay tuned.

Love,

My Favourite Things

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about my current favs. I always have a bunch of things that I get obsessed with, and right now these are the things I've been keeping in heavy rotation. I hope you enjoy them!

TURQUOISE
Okay...this obsession is not going to go away. I just recently painted my kitchen a lovely, rich shade of turquoise so I feel my collecting is on the verge of spiralling out of control! I mostly collect kitchen things in this beautiful aqua shade, but I've noticed it trickling into other areas of my home.

GOLD JEWELLERY
If you know me, you know gold is not my cup of tea. Maybe in clothing or home decor, but when it comes to jewellery, I stay clear. Even my entire jewellery line at CharmingShop is in silver! These are the only gold necklaces I own, and I've been incorporating them into my looks lately. Especially that geometric one on the left and the gorgeous wrapped stone on the top right. I've been wearing them together paired with my CharmingShop jewellery for a warm, flowing boho look. Maybe it has to do with the warmer weather, but I'm really wrapped up in gold!

 ENRICHING HAIR OILS
I am crazy for hair serums. They really work for my thick, unruly, frizzy hair. It's so hard to tame my hair, and the shine and nourishment these give my hair is just incredible. At first I was so afraid to use them, because I really thought they would just make my hair greasy, but I'm a believer now. I couldn't live without my hair oils. My Pantene serum is almost all gone, so I bought this Organix Coconut Milk serum. It's a little heavier than I'm used to, but the way it makes my hair look is amazing. I always feel like an Old Hollywood movie star with great hair, and I think that's awesome.

VINTAGE FASHION
I'm not really one to wear vintage clothing. I will do accessories and vintage inspired clothes. I never really got into wearing fashion from the past. I admire the lovely fabric and textures and patterns. I love the colour palettes in vintage clothes so much more than modern clothing. Maybe that's why I've chosen to do a collection of artwork directly inspired by vintage clothing and accessories. I have been obsessing over cute details and retro shapes and silhouettes. I'm living and breathing a retro fashion dream all through my artwork, and the research that goes into making it as special as possible. My mindset is vintage.

BAIT FOOTWEAR

Remember how I said I got a package in the mail a little while back? Well it was two amazing pairs of shoes from Bait Footwear. I ordered these two for birthday presents to myself, and I am so happy I did! It was outrageously hard to pick which ones I wanted because there were so many I loved, but somehow I got it down to these two. I picked the Noel shoe in Luggage and the Dennise wedge in Blue. They are the smallest size - size 6. I have to admit, I have such a hard time finding shoes. My feet are so tiny, and it seems like no one ever has my size. I was sort of traumatized a while back. When I was graduating, I was on the hunt for gold heels in my size to match my cream and gold vintage inspired dress. Well I couldn't find a pair anywhere! And one day while I was shopping a salesperson just told me to give up because my feet were way too small. How mean! Every now and then I'll find the right size. But I just had a good feeling about Bait Shoes because they cater to vintage-lovers, so I was pretty sure they would be small enough. Ladies of the past had smaller feet, so I just went with this logic and hoped for the best! These two fit like a glove. They're perfect and fun, and I can say I will definitely be ordering more.

What are your favourite things right now?

The Best Lipstick Tips

Hey ladies, I've got some beauty tips for you today of the lipstick variety!
Follow these dos and you'll have the creamiest, dreamiest lips you've ever seen!

So you want you're lipstick to stay put? You want it to last all day? Or even just longer that it does now? How can you stop lipstick from bleeding out onto my face? Does it really have to look so uneven? Or dry? WHAT DO I DO?

Hang on girls, I promise there's a solution for you. Never say you can't wear lipstick. If you say that now it's just because you haven't found your proper method yet. I promise. Anyone can wear lipstick it's just a matter of finding the right colour and texture you're happy with. So get playing!

1. Exfoliate and Moisturize - If you have dry lips, this is a must. Be very very gentle and use a light scrub on your lips. If you don't have a store bought lip scrub, baking soda mixed with a little warm water works just as well. Don't use a facial scrub on your lips! It's too harsh on your pretty pout. And of course follow up with a little lip balm. If you're doing this in the day and applying makeup right after, do this about half an hour or an hour before makeup. At night is the best time to exfoliate though, and you should really only have to exfoliate your lips once or twice a week. Don't over-exfoliate those babies. They'll burn!

2. Blot off your Balm - Okay so you've had that moisturizing lip balm on for a while now and it's time for your lipstick. If you've got too slick of a surface that lipstick's going to slide right off your face. Think about it. What's it going to adhere to when you're lips are already covered? Don't wipe it off with a kleenex. That's way too rough. Get out a Qtip and lightly dab off the excess lip balm to make way for your colour.

3. Primer - This is no joke. YES there are lip primers. And YES they are miracle workers. My favourite is actually is the Elizabeth Arden Lip Primer, because it is truly amazing. Do you have darker or lighter spots in your skin pigment that show up under lipstick? Do you find your lipstick smears off fast? Or you apply it only to reveal a very uneven consistency. Try a primer. You will be amazed. Especially with that one in particular.

4. Line Those Lips - Lip Liner will extend the life of the lipstick you've wearing and be a border to keep it where it needs to be. AND did you know it actually acts as a light reflector. That's why you should never have a darker lip liner than your lipstick colour. It can deepen and darken your colour and give it a muddy look. Basically dark lip liner creates shadows, ladies. And we don't want shadows on our face! We like light and glowy skin, right?! So choose a lip liner a shade or two lighter than your lipstick choice. It doesn't even have to be the exact same colour as long as you keep the colour neutral. Always swatch on your hand with your lipstick first so you can see how they work together. If you're nervous about lip liner and really don't understand what to get. Don't be scared, there's a solution for you. There's such a thing as invisible lip liner! It's completely clear. No worries. No mess. And best of all it'll go with all your lipstick!

5. Dab don't Drag - Words can not express how much this is going to help you, my dears. When you drag your lipstick across your lips you're depositing a lot of pigment in a short amount of time. Sure you get the colour on fast, but pretty soon it's going to migrate straight off your lips. If you want long lasting lip colour, you have to dot and dab it on. Stipple that lipstick onto your lips. When you press it on, the lipstick is adhering with a stain effect. And you can apply in layers. If you got too light of a finish the first time, go over it again. Sometimes I just dab on once to give my lips a light stain wash of a colour.

6. Powder It - Okay so you need EXTRA extra wear. Here's what you do. Take translucent face powder or even an eyeshadow colour in a similar colour to your lipstick and lightly transfer it onto your lips with a brush. Again pat it on, but it should be a very sheer amount. If you make it cake-y, later on in the day you will end up with clumps. Yuck.

7. Another Layer - Did you get that powder on? Good! Now we dab on another layer of the lipstick to cover that powder. Now both your first layer and this layer are sticking to the powder in between. It's like a bonding agent. So great!

8. Choices - Here's where you have a couple choices. I love having just a matte look, so I'm not a gloss girl, but lots of women love lip gloss. If you love gloss, get your favourite out lightly dab it onto your lips. The right gloss can actually extend the wear of your lipstick also.

9. Finishing Spray - Many makeup brands offer a finishing or setting spray to set all your makeup when it's done. I really recommend this for a special occassion, like Grad, your wedding or any really special days your makeup has to stay in place no matter what. Follow the instructions on the package, because you need to spray a certain distance away to get a light mist and not a splash of water on your face!

10. Look In The Mirror - One last glance and look! You have such gorgeous lips they almost don't look real! Getting your routine just right will take practice, but you will learn what's right for you and the amount of time you have to do your makeup. You don't have to do all the steps every day. I certainly don't. Skip steps according to your lifestyle and your lipstick will still look fab!

You're all set, so get practicing today! What's your favourite tip? Are there any you already incorporate into your routine?

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

What's in my Bag?

Welcome to my very first "What's in my Bag?" post! I've been wanting to do this for a while. I'll try to do them often, because just like every girl, the contents of my purse change quite often. And actually, not just the contents - I change my purse a lot too! I have some good purses, and I have to treat them all equally and wear them the same amount. This one is my favourite though, and the funny thing is I bought it on clearance so long ago (last one there for very very cheap.)And yet ladies stop me on the street wherever I go asking about it and saying how cute it is. Obviously I made the right choice in buying it...

What do I have in my bag here?
Well I'll tell you!
*my cute little purple purse
*business card holder packed full with my new cards
*oil blotting papers by Paul&Joe cosmetics
*adorable Bath&Body Works nail file
*RayBan sunglasses
*cute pearl collar necklace from H&M
*Carmex
*Marc Jacobs Daisy rollerball
*Paul&Joe Lipstick

Yes this purse looks tiny, but I can actually fit a lot in there! That's why I like it so much. It's compact, but it holds everything I need, just like magic. These are a few of my favourite things to keep on hand (personal items not included - keys, wallet - you get the idea.)

I keep my business cards on hand to give out to anyone when I need to - a business-lady must. I'm still getting the hang of this, because I'm not to good a self-promoting like other people are. I like to keep my nail file with me. I work with my hands a lot, so my nails tend to break on me at the worst times - usually out in public. Yuck. So if I can quickly fix that up as soon as possible, that makes my life easier. I like to have a necklace in my purse too, just in case I need a subtle wardrobe change. Like maybe suddenly I have to go out for dinner. Just having a sparkly necklace with me makes all the difference between a plain day look and a shimmering night look. Marc Jacobs Daisy is such a pretty spring scent. I fell in love with it last summer after a long battle with myself trying to figure out if I liked it or not. Tastes change, and I was dying for spring to come back around to wear it again!

And Paul&Joe, well that's self-explanatory! Look at how cute their stuff is. I've been collecting their adorable cosmetics for a while now, and I can't get enough of the pastels and vintage inspired look.
Look! There are my new business cards, fresh from the Printers! Hooray! If you follow me on Instagram (@marissahowes), I posted a picture after receiving them yesterday. I'm so happy with how they turned out. I couldn't ask for a cuter looking card!
That's all for today, my dears.
Have a good rest of your Sunday.
Relax. Go for a walk. Enjoy.

Odd Lips

Most of the time when you see me, I'm wearing one of two makeup looks - black cat-eye liner on my eyes and red lipstick or dramatic Sixties eyes with a peachy lip. I have a flair for vintage makeup in my own beauty routine. That's my comfort zone, and that's what defines me.
But here's the problem...
I'm a beauty junkie. Not like I used to be. I'm much more sensible now. I only buy to refill the necessities now. Let me tell you though, I still have quite the collection. It wasn't just for me. It was for all the ladies I used to do makeup on. Some of the things I would never dream of wearing again. They're strictly Cosmetician looks or something I bought with someone else in mind.
Now that I'm in a different line of work, I do my own personal look every day.
Sometimes though, I open up my cosmetic case, and play around.
As I mentioned before with Lipstick Love, I am absolutely head over heels for lipstick.
They are my weakness and probably always will be.
But I don't just have a million red lipsticks to feed my red lipstick addiction.
I have other colours too.
So I thought I would do a little post on some lip looks that I don't think I would ever wear in real life, but it sure was fun playing with some unusual colours!
Not all these looks are by actual lipstick. You can be much more creative by implementing
other cosmetics you own.

This is what I used:

1. Silver - MakeUpForEver Aqua Eyes 8L, MakeUpForEver Silver Eyeshadow.
2. Lilac - MAC Quite Cute
3. Candy Pink - MAC Saint Germain
4. Bright Peach - MakeUpForEver 402 Lipstick, #601 Anna Sui Lip Gloss.
5. Soft Green - Concealer Stick, #900 Anna Sui Eye Colour Accent
6. Gold - MakeUpForEver Aqua Eyes 9L, #850 Anna Sui Lip Gloss
7. Purple - Revlon Super Lustrous #663 Va Va Violet
8. Black - #060 Anna Sui Lip Rouge

Play around with your makeup! That's what it's for!
Would you wear any of these looks?

Healthy Brushes, Healthy Skin

Here's the truth ladies and gentlemen, cleaning your makeup brushes is not a option, It's a must.
Did you know, as you use your brushes, they collect dirt, oils and bacteria you can transfer onto your skin? Yuck. And what's worse, as you dip that brush into your favourite gold powder eyeshadow, you're actually contaminating it too!
What does that mean exactly? Well your amazing eyeshadow is not going to last as long. The colour or consistency might change, telling you it's time to get a new one. It will overall expire faster. And to think, we could prevent all that with a little brush cleaner!
Trust me, your wallet will thank you. Don't buy expensive prestige cosmetics and have it all go to waste. If you're investing in good makeup, spending a few extra dollars for a brush cleaner is really going to help you out. Your skin will be very happy too. Less bacteria means a cleaner, fresher face with less breakouts and clogged pores.
For Daily Cleansing:
To clean your brushes daily use a brush cleanser in a spray. It's so simple! Spray it on and gently move your brush back and forth on a paper towel until it wipes clean, and no residue is left on the brush. Almost every makeup brand has it's own brush cleanser. I'm a sucker for the Lise Watier brush cleanser, because it smells sweet like vanilla. Yummy. If you run out, you can also make a mixture with pharmaceutical alcohol and water, but remember this is not a permanent solution. It's not too good for your brushes, because it can dry them out over time.

For a Deep Clean:
Every now and then your brushes should get a good shampoo. Every month is probably good. You can purchase brush shampoos from your favourite makeup brand, or a cheaper alternative is using a baby shampoo or a gentle, organic or vegan friendly shampoo. Add a little dab to your brush and gently work through the brush under the tap with warm water. Your brush will look wet and misshapen. When they are clean, shape them a bit with your hands so they dry into their regular shape. You can lay them flat on a towel or place them back in their upright holder. Don't throw them back in your makeup bag!

The Key:
Be gentle. Your brushes may not look like it, but they are delicate. They will last forever if you take care of them.

Watch the handles. Do not soak your brushes in a bowl of water! If the handles are exposed to water for long periods of time, the glue will start to loosen and eventually you'll end up with two pieces and a broken brush.

A Good Tip:
If you're feeling wary about the condition of your makeup, give that a spray too and wipe away a layer with a Qtip.

I cleaned my brushes last night, so I thought I'd share some tips. I'm guilty of forgetting to clean my brushes sometimes, and I know lots of other people forget too. So get out your brushes right now and have a good makeup brush cleaning day!

Lipstick Love

Lipsticks? Yes please!
I have so many, and that's not even enough. Lipsticks are an obsession of mine. Early on I discovered I preferred the texture of lipstick over a gloss. I only have two or three lip glosses that I can tolerate. But lipsticks will always hold a special place in my heart. These are some of my favourites. I use them all the time. And sometimes there's up to five of these guys hanging out in my purse at any given time. No joke. Let's just say they're all in heavy rotation, and will probably need replacing soon.

Alright, I modeled each of these shades for you!
All in the same lighting and I started at the lightest colour to get the truest colour possible.
Have fun! I know I did!
My Faves:

1. 720 Fire&Ice by Revlon
2. 451 Sui Rouge Matte by Anna Sui
3. Pure Matte Lipstick by Nars in Tonkin
4. 650 Sui Rouge Matte by Anna Sui
5. 066 Lipstick by Paul & Joe
6. Heat Wave by Nars
7. Pure Matte Lipstick by Nars in Vesuvio
8. 61 Spanish Red Signature Lipstick by Estee Lauder
9. 461 Lip Rouge Velvet by Anna Sui
10. 477 Black Cherry by Revlon

What's your favourite lipstick? What shades can't you live without?

My All Time Favourites!

Today I want to talk about my all time favourite cosmetic products. These are the ones I always go back to. No matter how many I products I try, these are still my favourites. I like to try ones that claim to be similar to them or I think may sway me from them. It's like a test or a game to see if they can beat out everything else. Nothing can beat them! They're that good!

Now keep in mind, everyone is different. these are my "can't live without" products, but maybe they won't necessarily suit your needs. But from working with a lot of people over the years with their beauty needs, I can say the majority of you adore these ones too! They are worth trying out for sure.

Falsies Flared Mascara in Very Black (Waterproof) by Maybelline

Here's the deal, this one is not only my favourite mascara, but it's also my all time favourite cosmetic product! I have purchased so many of these, it's crazy. No matter what mascara I try, I always end up ditching it and going out to get this one again! I'm very loyal to this beauty.

What's so awesome about it? The spoon brush gets you to the bottom of the lashes and sweeps them up so high. Your lashes will look so full and amazing. People ask me all the time if I'm wearing false lashes! It gives volume, length and an overall dramatic look. it also wings out the sides of your lashes creating a really sultry, romantic look. I like waterproof mascaras, but this one does come in regular (and different colours.) I've tried both regular and waterproof and neither of them budge. No flaking or smudging throughout the day. It doesn't come off until you want it to. At the end of the day, this mascara looks just as good as when you put it on first thing in the morning. I like a mascara that's going to work overtime, because I don't have time to fix it up in the day. This mascara is worth it. Of course it takes a few times to get a hang of the spoon brush. That's what worries a lot of people. I promise you will get used to it! It's the best.

True Match Touche Magique Concealer by L'oreal

This concealer is insane. I've never ever been so impressed by a concealer. The fact that it is a mass product, but it behaves like a prestige product blows my mind. It has the qualities of a very expensive product. L'oreal did it right making this one. I will buy this concealer forever.

Why? First of all it's an illuminating anti fatigue product. Basically not only is there pigment to hide your dark circles, it also works with the light to draw attention away from flaws. It's a lifesaver. I like that it's not thick. The texture is light and silky, so there's no clumping in your eye area. It blends in really well and stays put. A lot of concealer with high coverage is thicker and can look cake-y if applied wrong. This formula is simple to apply. You really can't go wrong. I have very dark circles under my eyes and I've used it on other people with dark circles as well. It always does the trick. If you have this problem too, you need to try this. It's perfect for any blemish or problem area you want to hide.

Lise Watier Sun Smart

I am so glad I discovered this product, because it does a few different things. It actually eliminates a couple beauty steps, and making a beauty routine easier is a big bonus in my book! Now it's actually a sunscreen first of all. With an SPF of 30, it's dermatologically tested, extremely gentle and very silky soft. It had a universal uv shield, so it filters the suns harmful rays. It's also paraben free. It's also good for all skin types. Basically it's a sunscreen miracle. If you're like me, you hate the thick feeling of sunscreen. Especially on your face. That's a big problem. Here's where this gets interesting...it acts like a primer. Yes! It has a primer effect on the skin. it smoothes, fills in lines and pores and helps make your foundation look flawless! Put this on first and then the rest of your makeup and you will be amazed. I have an oilier acne prone skin type and I found that after using this it acted as a barrier to keep dirt and impurities away from my skin just like a primer would. It also made my skin fell smoother and healthier. I noticed a reduction in acne and my pores became small and untraceable! Even on days I don't wear makeup, applyng this makes my skin look amazing. It's on the pricier side, but this is one of those things that will pay off for you. Think about the price of a great primer and a really good sunscreen. This has both in one, and the level of sunscreen in this one is hard to beat. The sun is harsh! Be kind to your skin!

Nars Pure Matte Lipstick

My favourite of these lipsticks is Vesuvio, a bright matte red. In fact I'm wearing Vesuvio in my jewellery photos! I love the skinny, compact shape of these. It helps get the perfect amount on my lips without making a mistake or a huge mess. I can dot it right on the cupids bow on my top lip and the diameter of it fits my lip shape perfectly. I also love the long lasting effect. It's matte with an awesome colour payoff. Of course, if you're not crazy about matte lipstick, this may not be for you. But I adore a matte lip like nothing else! This one's also a bit pricier, but well worth it I've found. I get a lot more use out of these than all my other lipsticks. They come in a lot of great colours, and they bring in limited edition colours for different collections and seasons. I would suggest trying this lipstick on before purchasing to get a feeling of what it's like. Try it!

Annabelle Skinny Brow Liner (Universal Dark)

This is a great brow liner! It's so inexpensive but it's better than a lot of brow products from more expensive lines! It has a fabulous texture. When you use it, it glides on so effortlessly. The stick form is easy to use and it even has a brush on the end to comb out your brows. You can use it to create any number of looks. You can keep your brows thin and precise or full and thick or anything in between. It's such a good tool to get any look you need. I would definitely recommend trying this brow pencil out. I find it's better than using a powder or gel or any other type. It stays put, but still looks soft and natural.

I hope you enjoyed my favourite products. If it inspires you to go out and try them, that's great! Let me know so we can gush about how awesome they are later. Have a great day everybody and Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate Easter!

Best Beauty Basics

How are you today? Good? Good!
A little fun fact you don't know about me: previously I worked in the beauty industry for almost five years! Crazy, huh? Over the years I have picked up many tips and tricks and have had the chance to work with so many brilliant (and not so brilliant) products, and I thought I would share some with you.

What I've noticed lately is everyone seems to be going on holidays! Not me obviously. I wish! The weather is starting to warm up a little, but people are opting for some tropical destinations to lift their spirits. So what do you pack in that makeup bag? Well when traveling I always like to bring the best multi-use items. The more you can get out of one product, the better. Pack light so you can bring home more treasures and souvenirs!

#1 Elizabeth Arden Skin Protectant - You can use this to moisturize dry skin, to help heal burns, on your hands and cuticles, your feet, in your hair to tame frizz and fly-aways, to shape your brows, on your lips, on your eyelids for that wet look. Anything! This stuff has so many uses it's crazy. It does have a medicinal scent so if you don't like the smell, choose the unscented version!

#2 Any Soft Pencil Eyeliner or eyeshadow that matches your hair colour as close as possible - Okay this one's a little strange, I know, but it's awesome. Now try to choose a very gentle formula that is hypoallergenic. Ask if you need help. This works the best for light brown to darker hair. Now you have a product that can act as an eyeshadow or liner to define your eyes. Use it on your eyebrows to frame your face. And you can gently use it in your hair to mask roots! I am a natural blonde and I do this sometimes when I don't have the time to dye my hair. Make sure you keep your pencil or shadow brush clean!

#3 Eyelash Curler - So you probably noticed we haven't talked about mascara yet, and there's a reason. When you travel, mascara can be too messy and hard to take off. Effortlessness is key. You're already defining your eyes with product #2, so in #3 we are looking at eyelash curlers. You got me there, eyelash curlers only really do one thing, but it's essential to having lifted lashes to keep your eyes looking wide and fresh without mascara. Try it! I chose this picture, because this Shu Uemura curler is the one I have. It's a bit more expensive, but it will be with you for the long haul. My eyelash curler and I have been beauty partners for years now and I would choose it any day over any other kind. In the past I've had cheaper eyelash curlers, one of which got jammed and attached to my eye,         but that's another story. All I'm saying is go for quality here. It's worth it.

#4 Pink/Neutral Cream Formulas - Again, find a product that is gentle and hypoallergenic. Find a nourishing cream formula blush or even lip product (or 2 in 1.) My favourite is when you can find a cream palette. If you can find one with multiple browns, neutrals and soft pinks you've hit the jackpot. But please, if you're unsure ask your beauty expert, because some products aren't meant to be used certain places! For an example I'm showing you the Tarte Cheek Stain. If you find a stain too drying on the lips, add the Skin Protectant with it! (See what I just did there? These products are useful!) You can use a cream on your cheeks, lips AND eyes as an eyeshadow. Be careful with eyes though. Neutrals/ bronze tones work best on the eyes.

#4 Concealer and Foundation 2 in 1 - This Lise Watier one is super dreamy and gorgeous. It's one of the best I've come across, but there are others so feel free to stray from my choice! Here's the deal. Concealer and foundation are both necessary. If you want awesome holiday pics, you are going to need both. So save some room in your suitcase by getting a 2 in1. This Lise Watier foundation has a amazing coverage while still being fairly lightweight. If you're going somewhere hot it won't be melting off your face. Staying power is the best judge of a good foundation.

Alright you're all set to go. Have fun on your trip! Or if you're staying home like me, try this as your new simple beauty routine. Thanks for listening. I'm off to make some gorgeous earrings for CharmingShop. Pictures to come soon!
