It's like project city over at my house lately. We're still chipping away at the finishing touches in our basement. I never dreamed putting things away and getting organized would take this long, but I'm thankful for the progress being made.

Even our bedroom is undergoing a few changes. A couple weeks ago we hosted a garage sale at my house and my grandma contributed a couple mystery boxes that I was unaware of until the garage sale was actually going on! It was a super close call, because my most treasured set of items of hers were in one of the boxes!! A Four Seasons wall hanging set from Coppercraft Guild. I know it seems pretty silly that they would be so important and memorable to me, but I always remember wanting them from a very, very young age. Needless to say they are now mine and awaiting their turn to be hung up in our bedroom like they were in hers all those years.

Today I received a FREE extra long 60s Walnut dresser with a mirror for our bedroom. My dad originally bought a full set for his cabin, but couldn't fit this particular one in any of the rooms. So I guess I lucked out! This thing is the absolute coolest and I'm glad because I agreed to take it based only on knowing the wood type and seeing the headboard from the set. I was pretty confident I knew what the shape would be and I was spot on. She needs a light scrub and some oil to restore the shiny finish in places, so onto the list that goes. Pictures to come obviously!

Because I've been so focussed on home things and haven't posted anything new lately (in the shop and on the blog) I decided to have some simultaneous sales going on in both shops. Maybe you've seen them already, but if you haven't...

diy plant holder.

I haven't felt very inspired to do any DIY projects lately, but the other day during one of my Value Village trips I found some little bowls that were begging to be turned into some sort of crafty goodness. 

There were four of them for $2.99 and for that price I thought they were worth picking up. They're those kitschy kind of dishes that would've originally had a handle, but they had been removed leaving a hole on either side of each. I automatically thought of hanging them as planters at different heights, for myself or for gifts. And anyway, the pattern on them was way too cute to pass up! Im always looking for ways to add colour and interest in my home, especially in the planter variety.

I've only finished one so far, with the cord being about 30 cm long and it took about 10 to 15 minutes altogether. Super quick!

For this cord I used basic natural coloured hemp string. I cut two long strands for each side. Four in total. I took both strings together and threaded them through one hole. Then tied a tight knot at the exact centre. Next I did a simple braid, but with four strands. (To make it easier I just grouped two strings together and braided them like a three-strand braid. Nothing fancy.) Tie a knot on the end when you've reached your desired length. Repeat these steps on the other side and try to get both as even as possible. You don't want a lopsided hanging planter. No way! 

I'm sure you can think of a cooler way to finish it off when tying it together, but I just tied the top together in two knots to join them and cut off the ends, letting it look rough and unfinished. Hemp string has that unfinished look to it anyway. I think for my next one I will try ribbon in alternating black and white and do a more polished look. I may even do all of them in different colours and styles.

This is a reminder to anyone with seemingly broken dishes. You may be able to repurpose them and give them an interesting new life! What do you have laying around?

Drying Flowers.

 This summer I got these sweet little weed-like flowers at the St. Norbert Farmers Market. I actually don't know what they're called, so if anyone does, please tell me! I loved the simple aesthetic of them and I knew they would look very pretty when dried. I usually hate keeping flowers, because they wilt and die so fast. I prefer having actual plants, but even then I'm not really good at keeping them healthy, let alone alive! 

I thought if I could keep these in a vase for a while and let them dry up, they'd be with me for a long time with little trouble. I had them in an English porcelain vase my dad got me this summer at a garage sale, mixed in with some roses. The combination of deep red and periwinkle blue was so beautiful. The roses died recently, so I decided it was time to start preserving the them now. 

This weekend I got this vase from 1949 at a garage sale for $1. I love the unique asymmetrical shape, so these unconventional flowers fit in nicely. These flowers are kind of like a dandelion once they've gone to seed, but a lot thicker. They're very similar to a thistle, especially when it comes to it's sharp thorns!

Once when I was younger, my grandmother's neighbour told me if you want to keep weed-like flowers, you have to spray them with an aerosol hairspray. This keeps the seeds in place for years, so they don't fall off as they dry up. It acts as a light adhesive. She had giant seeded dandelions in a vase in her cabin and I remember being so interested in them. Of course I tried this and it worked so well! As I was preparing them, some sections were falling off. I had to leave out one whole bulb, because too many had come off. As soon as I sprayed them, they stayed in place. We'll see what the lasting power is like I guess, but I'm hoping for the best!

It felt like a waste to throw out the pretty bits left over from the broken bulb, so I put them in a small retro Ironstone bowl. I plan on adding a few drops of essential oils to give it some fragrance. And voila! Instant potpourri.

I think I got my moneys worth from these babies. As usual Farmers market flowers can be pricey, but I'm not sorry I splurged on these. They're too pretty and I think I'll be able to hang onto them for a while. Going into Fall now, most of my garden has given up, so I'll just take pleasure in how amazing these will look through the rest of the year.

Basement Inspiration

Most of my online silence this summer has been due to some major changes in our home. We have a very sweet but tiny mid century house built in 1950, that we bought hoping to restore it back to its full potential. Being that it's summer and all, we decided it was high time to get started on a major problem - our basement.

In our area, a lot of houses don't have basements. Or if they do, they're just concrete holes in the ground below the house. We were lucky to get a finished basement, that needed some extreme TLC.

It's permanently dirty from years of wear and neglect, cold and way too dark. Besides when we first moved in we had to have some plumbing done and a bunch of wall was ripped open and exposed. Even some ceiling tiles had fallen down. And the old linoleum tile flooring was missing so many tiles too. I'm sure it was fabulous back in the 50s, but not so much anymore.

Like all reno projects, the job is slow and tedious. There's always some unforeseen issue to resolve. But in the end all the waiting around for the finishing point will be worth it. In excited to have insulation in the walls for the first time ever, and some good wiring so that I'm not afraid to use the outlets. I feel like in always waiting for things to burst into flames! Old houses are both fun and dangerous. You've got to be ready for anything.

Right now we are almost ready to paint, but we sure went through some rough stages. When you tear out all the walls down to the concrete and start from scratch, there's a lot to be done. I can only begin to dream up our new layout and how our furniture (now in storage) will look down there. I'm truly excited to get my 60s blue velvet couch back! It's one of my very favourite possessions. I feel like I'll end up designing the room around it.

In theme with all my basement plans I wanted to share some photos that will serve as inspiration for me while I decide how to paint, (I'm leaning towards a soft grey, clean white and deep midnight blue for accents.) how to set my faux fireplace mantle into the wall and what else we need to make the space great. All that good stuff! Enjoy!

 One of our top focal points on our wish list for this basement was a large bookshelf. This one is perfect and I'm liking the warmth in this photo anyway. So into the inspiration folder it goes!

 This room is very clearly a living room, but the colour scheme is very similar to what we're looking for. The cozy setup is perfect for having friends over for a visit or reading on the couch. 

As you can see we're definitely going for a mix of modern and mid century. It needs to match the rest of the house, while still being a room that my Fiancé will enjoy playing guitar and putting his enormous collection of books in. I thought he would love to have a slanted magazine rack attached to the bookshelves to display some of his more collectible books. This room seems lovely.

Again, these are living rooms, but apparently everyone thinks a basement needs to look like a dark cave. I'm looking forward to bring lightness and cute bursts of colour into the space like these perfectly styled places: One and two.

My blue velvet couch looks in a little better shape than this sweet girl, but fitting mine into my basement and designing a colour scheme around it is top on my priority list.

This mantle was decorated by a very creative fellow Winnipegger, Erin from Ohsolovely. I can only hope to decorate my new mantle as nice as this one! There is no doubt this needs to be included in my inspiration photos. 

 It's nice to know blue velvet couches can look pretty against a variety of colours. I'm so ready to start decorating!

I can't wait for all the messy work to be done, so I can start moving stuff around. For now I can only dream up potential layouts and paint colours.

My Life Lately.

I've been wanting to commit more to daily life posts, but it's funny to do them when I don't have too much going on right now. Things have been crazy lately though. So many highs and lows. I'm taking it all in and accepting everything for what it is. Here are a few things I've been handling lately.

The other week I went to the hospital for an appointment I've been waiting over a year for. I've been very sick for a long time now and have been making due as best I can. The appointment didn't go as planned and I left feeling very discouraged and alone. But when I think about it, it only confirms what I thought beforehand, I have to tackle this with strength. I'm in charge of my own life and my own health. I know my body and my limits. I can do this.

Baby Holly, the first day we got her.

 Exactly one week ago we said goodbye to one of our fur babies. Holly was our very first pet together. She was part of a new chapter where we realized we'd be starting a life together. We named her after Holly Golightly, Audrey Hepburn's character in Breakfast at Tiffany's. She was small and dainty, and lived most of her life with severe anxiety. She was a handful, hard to take care of, and things had been spiralling out of our control for so long. We finally had to make the choice to put her down. It was one of those terrible things you hope you never have to do and a decision you never want to have to make. Even with all her troubles, we loved her deeply as a member of our family. I'm never going to forget her sweet little face. Our team of four Is down to three. We're all a little heartbroken and lonely.

Yep, worst fear. That was really depressing. Don't worry, things haven't just been sad lately, I promise. It's been sort of bittersweet. My boyfriend and I are both powering through our creative paths recently. I don't think I've talked about it in too much depth before, but my boyfriend, Wai has been illustrating two educational comic books for about a year and a half now. They're part of a fabulous series based on Native Canadian historical figures. One book is still in the works, but the first (among other stories illustrated by a few other artists) is available to purchase already. In fact there's going to be a book signing in the coming months! I am just so proud of him. Not only is he extremely talented, but I'm so thrilled he could be a part of such a special project. These books are aimed at a younger audience and I just know they'll get kids excited and proud of their heritage.

As for me, I have recently been asked to be featured in a couple television segments for my handmade confetti. It's really a dream come true, especially considering how tiny my shop is at this point in time. 

I've been trying to dress up whenever I can to make myself feel better. I think it's kind of a proven fact, when you take the time to do your make up and put on some nice clothes, your outlook completely changes. I'm not going to lie, my go-to outfits lately have been my pjs. This dress was a recent online purchase and it's probably my favourite thing in my closet. Im already getting so much wear out of it.

April is here, and I'm in a constant state of unrest, staring at everything and rearranging with my mind. I've got a lot of painting to do and a lot of stuff to get off my hands before the basement reno. I've been trying to purge a lot of vintage things I've collected over the years. My style has definitely changed and transformed over the years. These necklaces are something I always wore ten years ago, but they're not my thing any more. In the shop they go. I see another garage sale in our future when the weather warms up.

Okay this post was a little more intense than usual, but it was real. Things aren't always rosy and they don't have to be. That's life. Good and bad. I'm really just looking forward and wondering where we'll go next.

Christmas 2013

Christmas went by too fast this year. I've been so busy, and we truly haven't even spent a whole lot of time at our own home. It was a real go-between for all our get-togethers and holiday hangouts this year. Next year I plan to spend more time at home, and maybe try hosting our own party here. (We'll just see what my tiny 1950s kitchen will allow.) Anyway, I wanted to show you what we've been up to this year at the Howes-Tien household.

This year I decorated three trees! Well I normally do, but this year Wai helped me put ours up, which was really special. The top left is our tree of course. A purchase I made this Fall off Etsy, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. The right is my Mom's tree. I decorated this baby all by myself this year! Below is my Dad's tree. I couldn't pass up a photo of this cozy situation right here. I could cuddle up in front of that fireplace forever!

I've always had a green tree growing up, but because our cat Royal chewed our tree lights to bits last year and we had a dark tree all holiday long, I wanted to opt for something different and without lights. It took some getting used to but our first year with an aluminum tree was a real success! Not that I don't miss our old standard tree!

Bringing colour and whimsy into our home has been a goal since we moved in. Wai and I have very different styles, but we were both interested in bringing a fun and not-so-serious look to our home. That goes for Christmas too. We've been so lucky to be gifted incredible vintage christmas decorations from my Mom and Grandma. Most of our things are incredibly retro-looking, so we aimed to incorporate more pastel ornaments this year. With our home looking more and more like a 1950s/60s dollhouse every day, I wanted our house to keep its vintage fantasy look all throughout the holidays!

Last year I made this cone christmas tree. It's not quite finished and I didn't get around to completing it this year either. A definite goal for next year!

This year my mom let me take home a bunch of old ornaments I always coveted growing up. It always amazes me how careful we were around all the old christmas decorations as little kids. But I shudder when I think of the fragile mercury glass ones we broke by accident, or the ones that were swiped off the tree by the dog's tail; smashed in pieces all over the floor. 

She also found me some gorgeous ornaments this summer that were exactly right for my new tree this year! If you don't know already, she's my thrifting partner-in-crime. We constantly teach each other everything we know about antiquing and vintage-hunting. We both have such different styles, which helps us cover off a huge range of knowledge. I probably wouldn't love vintage this much if it weren't for her instilling it in me from a young age! With her new ornaments and some cute wooden ones I found at a Wisconsin garage sale, all for 25 cents in September, I decorated our tree and home in a whole new way this Christmas.

This year I was very aware of how dark our house was. Winnipeg winters are very low-light and can be quite depressing at times. To bring some much needed brightness to our home, I decided to open up our front curtains for Christmas. The cats sure agreed that it was a great idea!

This year I took part in the GoodyGoodyGiftSwap, and this was the card I made for my swap mate. I would definitely do it again next year, because it was loads of fun. The gift I received was 

over-the-top adorable! I got a pair of screw-back rhinestone earrings and long glittery-gold gloves with pearl buttons. How cute! I also took the plunge to cut off my long, dark hair to my shoulders and start bleaching it black slowly to my natural hair colour. Blonde, here we come!

Christmas is also always jammed with parties for one more reason - my little sister's birthday. She turned 22 this year! 

For us, the parties are essentially over, but I know lots of you are still celebrating away. Happy holidays to you, your family and friends. I hope Christmas 2013 was a wonderful and magical time for you and it continues on into the new year!

Getting Crafty - Handmade Wreath and Mini Mid Century House

Here's a wreath I made this season in some of my down time. It took about an hour to do in total, so if you're thinking about attempting something similar, do it! In no time at all, you'll have a very adorable new holiday decoration!

I started by mapping out pieces of cardboard to construct the walls and roof of my little home. Then I carefully glued it all together piece by piece with my fancy new glue gun. (Somehow my old one disappeared!) 

Also if you're wondering, I left the inside of the house hollow, so it would be lightweight and could later be glued easily onto my wreath. 

I wanted my house to look super crafty and casual. Sort of an imperfect, slightly wonky look you often find on vintage mini Putz-style houses. To achieve this look, for all my fabric and paper pieces I didn't do any measuring. I glued the main wall coloured paper on with my hot glue gun and the rest of the smaller pieces with regular craft glue.

Here's the other side, which I did in a completely different colour pattern! It's a 2-in-1! I liked the idea of turning the wreath around to get a new style if you were bored of the one side, or maybe it wouldn't always go with your other holiday decor. A little change can be good. 

Can you spot the little tree I cut out of shiny metallic green wrapping paper? There's one on each side for some extra detail.

The roof was so much fun to make. I used a mixture of white glitter and some vintage heavier-weight glitter, which is actually more like tiny, clear plastic chips. My Grandma gave it to me from her years of painting and glazing ceramics. She used this one for her christmas village scenes, to look like snow, so I thought this was fitting. I first covered the roof with blank white paper and then drew scallops on the top with my glue gun. While still warm I dipped it in a bowl of my glitter concoction. To create the appearance of icicles, I let the glue drip off the side of the roof a little, and dipped the sides in glitter as well.

To finish off the look I hid the unfinished edges of the house with embroidery thread. 

                               Now all that was left was to glue it onto my wreath I made a few days prior. 

                    All I did was cut a thin square out of cardboard, staple one end of tinsel garland to it and 

                             start wrapping away! Once I got to the end I stapled the other end. Super easy.

I packed this one up recently and shipped it out to my Giveaway Winner as part of her prize. For some reason I always end up giving things away more than I keep things for myself. I was planning to make more of these, but it looks like I have run out of time. The next couple of weeks are already scheduled full, so I doubt I'll be making any more mini houses this year. Next year I'll make time to create a whole village!

DIY - Crafty Holiday Cone Tree Tutorial with Ribbon and Sequins

After moving into our current home, I knew I wanted to start our own Holiday traditions here. Ones we can keep following up on when we start a family. Growing up we had a lot of holiday traditions. One being getting our Grandparent's tree up reeeaally early in November every year, so they could have their fancy holiday party with all their friends. Even making gingerbread cookies with my mom.
 Mostly I was designated to pressing M&Ms onto their stomachs for buttons. (Back then I wasn't so steady with the icing or that great at baking at all for that matter...)
I have nothing but warm and fond memories of Christmas as a child, and making sure my own family feels that way is very important to me. After lots of moving around and downsizing happening over the years in my family, I have received essentially all of my christmas decorations from my Grandma and Mom. They're a symbol of the past and I love the idea of carrying them on into the future here at my house.
Even though I really covet my extremely old Christmas items that hold a lot of value in my heart, I'm really big on crafting up my own decorations. Probably my favourite holiday things are the ones that were handmade by my family members. (I always tried to figure out how they were made and wished I could do something that amazing!) Now I feel that it is my job to get cracking on some crafty things to fill our space, and inspire the new and future generation of little ones in our life. My tradition? Making at least one new holiday tree every year!

This is what you need:

* sequins (two different colours and sizes.)

* small beads/seed beads
* sewing pins

* sewing ribbon/fabric edging

* scissors

* styrofoam cone tree

Let's get going on this super cute mod-looking tree!

This project requires a bit of coordination (and both hands), but it's very easy.

 STEP 1 Start from the very top, so if you get to the bottom and theres space left, you can slice it off with a knife without compromising your tree. place your ribbon edge down and secure with 1 to 2 pins. Push them right into the styrofoam.

STEP 2 as you wrap your ribbon around the cone, push pins into the cone with your desired sequin pattern. This creates sparkly ornaments on your tree. For mine, I first put on one red seed bead, then a smaller red sequin and then a larger pearlized sequin. I chose to put my sequins on in their concave position, so I would get the most out of their sparkle. Because my ribbon had flowers on it, I used the middle of the flower as a marker of where my pin should go.

STEP 3 Once you get back to where you started, make a cut in your ribbon. Not right at where the ribbons meet. Give a little bit of room, because we have to fold it over. So the line doesn't look messy or unfinished, slightly fold your ribbon over and use 2 pins to secure each side of the very end. 

STEP 4 Repeat steps 1-3 all the way down to the very bottom, or as far as you can go. I did each layer so the edges would join at the same place as the last. That way there is a seam down only one side of the tree. If there's extra styrofoam you can cut it off like I said above, or just leave it how it is. Maybe you'll find another way of finishing yours off, Like by attaching fake glittery snow with glue around the very bottom edge! So cute!

This is such an easy, no glue/no mess way to get a clean and sleek holiday cone tree. I hope it inspires you to make one or even think up some of your own holiday DIY projects!

It's Time for Some Fall Love

Did you know Fall is my favourite season? This time of year I get obsessed with roasting root vegetables and baking seasonal treats. I wear a lot of wool sweaters and drink large amounts of tea. My all time favourite thing though is the one day I look forward to every year...Halloween. Even at the very end of summer I start dreaming up costume ideas (Yes, I'm 23 and I still dress up just for fun!) and how to decorate my home to make it the best on the block. We like to go all out and the fact that this is our second year in our home is very liberating in terms of going Halloween crazy! All I can say is my handmade autumn wreath is up on my door already and I'm getting into the cold weather spirit. If you're not that into fall or struggling with how to put yourself in the mood to be inspired this season, don't worry! I've put together a list of things I'm doing to keep myself cozy as the weather changes. 

Top left: I made these awesome Pumpkin Pecan Muffins and a Loaf from the same recipe! (Recipe posted below!) This recipe calls for canned but using fresh pumpkin instead would be truly amazing.

Top right: In the Fall, Bath and Body Works is my best friend. There are a lot of scents I don't like, because I find them too artificial, but I'm crazy for their Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin scent. Their other scents that contain spices like cloves are also amazing because they carry right into Winter and the Holiday Season. So if you bought too many, they'll be relevant for a while!

Bottom left: This was my very first year of planting in my garden and I haven't quite gotten the hang of landscaping yet. I know I have many years to figure it out, so I'm not worried. However my plants didn't do so well this year. The late start to the summer meant the seeds I planted are only just starting to  get their blooms! What the heck! I planted some hens and chicks and they didn't do well at all. I brought a couple inside as an experiment and they did great. So I gathered up the rest and put them in a new pink Mid Century planter from Value Village. These babies are staying with me for the winter. My Fall goal? Fixing up my garden, collecting seeds and bringing some plants inside for the winter. Next year my garden will survive!

Bottom right: Staying cozy with pillows. I've been on the hunt for gorgeous retro fabric. I found two old pillowcases that were falling apart, so I cut them into round circles and made pillows! In the colder weather, sitting surrounded by warm blankets and comfy pillows is essential. We were lucky enough to install a new furnace when we moved in, but I don't always feel like using the heat, especially so early in the season. I'm trying to conserve energy by cuddling my new homemade pillows. 

I bet you're ready for that recipe now, right?!

Pumpkin Pecan Muffins

Be aware this recipe makes so much! Like I said earlier, I got a large loaf and a dozen muffins out of it.

It is also by no means healthy, but sometimes you just have to treat yourself!

*1 can of pumpkin puree (15 oz)

* 4 eggs

* 1 cup vegetable oil

* 2/3 cup water

* 3 cups sugar

*3 1/2 cups flour

*2 tsp baking soda

*1 1/2 tsp salt

* 1 tsp cinnamon

* 1 tsp nutmeg

* 1 cup pecans (add more or less for desired amount)

* extra pecans for garnishing on top

Mix all your dry ingredients in a bowl and then add all wet ingredients. Mix well. Grease your loaf pan or muffin tin and pour in. Muffins will bake for 20-30 mins and Loaves will need 50 mins to 1 hour to bake. Mine needed the full 30 mins and hour, but it will all depend on your oven, so keep a good eye on them. Take them out and let them cool for 10-15 mins before serving. I hope you enjoy!

So there it is, a good pumpkin recipe to start you off this season. Other things I've been enjoying? I'm re-watching Lost and I'm powering through it, because I honestly forgot how much I used to love it! I'm back to wearing my FlowerBomb fragrance. It's a strong, spicy and warm floral if you've never tried it. It's positively deadly. I only bring it out for Fall and Winter, so it's been on repeat for the past week and will be my continuous go-to until Spring gets back again. It's a little on the pricier side and I actually got the bottle I'm currently on for free. (Oh, the perks of working in the beauty industry. But I'm not anymore!) If you're on a budget, Rihanna's fragrance Reb'l Fleur is a fantastic dupe. I am not really a Rihanna fan, but really, who needs to know!? My music playlist has been a mix of Planta, the newest CSS album and Austra's Olympia. Austra is coming to Winnipeg soon and I'm too excited to see them again! I'm listening to so much A.C. Newman as well. I can't get enough of powerful music while I work on CharmingShop. Creativity needs background music for sure!
